County board, highway folks in tiff over road The myth of joint authority in secondary road allocations be tween the Highway Department and the Boards of County Com missioners may be on the verge of explosion in Orange County. In the balance is a propose< $36,000 allocation for a road the County Commissioners say they don’t want. The amount'involv ed for the single road is hal: the total the Highway Dept . proposes to allot to stabilizatioi projects in this county in 1963 64. CHAPEL HIIJL HIGH SCHOOL STARTING THURS., JUNE 13 Registration 6:30-7:00 Reading Dynamics is the na tionally famous course that teaches students to read 3 to 10 times faster with improved comprehension and more en joyment. So far as we know, no reading course other than Evelyn Wood Reading Dynam ics ever won such high praise from so many enthusiastic people, And no Reading Dy namics Institute in the nation has received more letters of high praise than has the In stitute right here in N". C. Reading Dynamics is a uniquely different course. Part of what it teaches is just plain common sense, often neglected but vitally important. Part of it explores little used powers of the most mysterious force in the known universe, the hu man mind. To most people it is a fascinating, challenging course. They enjoy it, look forward to the lessons, work hard and derive much benefit. The meeting had been sched uled to allow the Division Com > missioner James G. W. MacLam roc and/or his staff to present , the “proposed” list of alloca . tions of Secondary Road proj ects the Highway Dept, had de cided to include in the next fis cal year’s construction program, an annual ritual' in which the Engineer reads off the proposed program and hands the commis sioners a pep to attach their O kay. Up until now there’s no record of the county board fail ing in the role of rubber stamp, although often a majority has [failed to appreciate the com ! plete package that has been of fered. Bone of contention now ap pears to be this: next year’s program, according to advance notice given Chairman Donald Stanford, allots $36,000 of the $72,856 in stabilization funds for a new road extending SR 1101 from its intersection with SR 100 (Orange Grove Road) to N. C. Highway 54 at a point close to Bethlehem Church. Chairman Stanford is embar rassed by this large allocation through family property for a road of low priority in compar- ’ ison with other pressing needs in the county, and other com missioners share the same view and see other needs far more pressing. They propose to withhold ap proval if and when the High way officials get around to scheduling another meeting or telling them why the other was cancelled without the courtesy of a notification. Commissioner MacLamroc told' The News two hours before the meeting it had been cancelled, but the commissioners learned it 15 minutes after they had as sembled at convening time and then the result of long distance telephone inquiries.
