: second half of the Science Series
will be offered in July.
Thb Sumner Science Series of
lectiftes and classroom science
projects is new. in its fourth sea
son. The Series has proved so
popular in previous years that
this year each course has been
expanded. >5
Courses this summer will meet
each week day for two weeks, a
total «f ten class sessions per
course. Instructor Donald Hall,
Administrative Assistant at the
Morehead Planetarium, will be
joined in giving the Series by
Richard S. Knapp, Student Direc
tor <tf the Rice Planetarium at
Stetson University, Deland, Flor
ida. Mr. Knapp will be a science
associate at the Morehead Plane
tarium for the summer, and will
also act as curator of science ex
hibits at the Planetarium.

Astronomy I, for children aged
8 through 11, begins June 10 at !
9:15 a.m. Classes are 45 minutest
long. In Astronomy I, pupils will
study the Sun, the Moon, and
other members of the solar sys
tem including planets, asteroids,
meteors, and comets. The course
will not consist solely of lectures,
but will also involve construction
projects for pupils to take home.
Also for children 8 through 11,
“Science Sampler*’ covers inter
esting aspects of both the physi
cal and natural sciences, and in
cludes constructing projects, per
forming experiments, and field
trips. “Science Sampler” ends

For children aged 12 through
16, a more advanced Astronomy
I also begins June 10, offered
from 1 to 2 p.m. The advanced
Astronomy I is a thorough study
of the elements of the solar sys
tem including celestial mechanics
and the problems of space ex
ploration, among other activities.
Also for 12-16-year-olds, “Ap
plied Science” is being offered
from 2:16 to 3:15 p.m. June 10
through June 21. Members of the
class will participate in scientif
ic experimentations, construction
of individual projects, arid visits
to various departments of the
University of North Carolina ini
Chapel Hill to watch science at
work.
Astronomy n for 8-11-year-olds
and for 12-16-year-olds will be
offered from July 8 through 19.
“Science Sampler” and “Applied
Science” Will be repeated July
8 through July 19.
The fee for one student for one
course is $5; for two different
courses, $9; and for three differ
ent courses, $12.—.
