RETIRING COUNTY FARM Agent Don Mathescn accepted with appropriate graciousness the tributes bestowed on him at the reception in his honor last Sunday. But he was right in his informal, easy - going man ner when he genially declared “I think when I die you ought to just dig a hole and throw me in. All the good things that could possibly be said about me have already been said here today.” Observing the 200 - odd people waiting to shake his hand in the receiving line, he observed with some Dickensian sincerity — "You know, it all makes me feel like a — hum Dug! WHEN HE CAME TO HILLS Iboro from Arkansas in 1928, Squire Don reminiced, he had nothing but “the shirt on my back and a model T Ford.’1 His fortunes increased and he “married the prettiest girl in the county’’ and acquired the only mother-in-law (Mrs. J. Cheshire Webb) in the county who had hot running water.” On another occasion recently Matheson recalled that when he and Bonner Sawyer became charter members of the Hills boro Lions Club they were both so young they were still wear ing short pants. And they de bated over whether to join the Lions or the Boy Scouts. SPECULATION IS RIFE, and getting rifer, over the suc cessor to L. J. Phipps as Or ange County legislator for^ the forthcoming special session of J the General Assembly. It is gen erally felt 'that whoever gets the nod will still face Phipps in the Democratic primary next spring. Hon. Jim is like Bre’r Rabbit as to his political inten tions, will strictly say no com ment. But he shows some symp toms of a patient vtuth candi dates’ buck fever. THE CHAP EX HTIX FIRE Department set a fire of its own this morning — all in the interests of public health and firemen’s training. An old de serted house on Nunn Alley off W. Rosemary was burned to the ground as a training mission for the Department’s call and regular men. —It also rid the town of a much - frequented drinking spot for winos. THE 1963 - 64 CHAP EX HHX municipal budget will likely show a 10 - cent tax rate in crease to an over - all rate of $1.20 per $100 property valua tion. This was the general con census of the Chapel Hill alder • More PEALINGS on Page 4 In token of service... HONOR RETIRING AGENT - Mrs. Henry Walter (left) presents to Mr. and Mrs. Don S. Matheson an engraved silver tray, given by friends of the retiring county farm agent at a testimonial program sponsored last Sunday afternoon by the Or ange County Pomona Grange. The Mathesons in turn set up an endowment fund for awards to Or ange County Four-H youth leaders, and additional j public contributions brought this to $2,200 — with j the Mathesons’ $1,000 gift. Mr. Matheson plans to \ go into the private real estate business in Hillsboro \ in the near future. 10 pet. decline in farming shown by census last year —See story on Page 8 ★ ★ ★ ★ ,★ ★ ★ ★ ★ —See story on Page 3
