Grocery boy* cut. . . Assault trial is continued in local court Assault charges against a Hills boro youth were continued one week for trial in Orange County Recorder’s Court yesterday. The defendant, 22 - year • old Robert Cotten, was released on f|00 bond in connection with the hfcifing assault at Carr’s Super market about 7 p. m. last Satur day. According to information glpen .. sheriff’s deputies Cotten was talking to Calvin Johnson, IK store employee, while the lat ter sacked up his groceries. An argument arose and Cotten invited Johnson outside where Gotten allegedly cut him on the right arm and hand with a pock et knife, then fl&J. He was ar rested a short while later. Another assault on an em ployee of the store took place on the night of July 2 when Edward Clapp, 16, was beaten and scratched over his body with a razor-tipped box opener which he used in his work at the store. Chief Deputy Paul Cook said the victim told him a young Negro lad jumped into his car about 10:30 p. m. when he stopped to avoid a car that had pulled in front of him. A third car with out-of-state license plates pulled jn front of Clapp’s vehicle, and Clapp was ordered to follow it. On a deserted road behind the Cone Mills Eno plant Clapp said (be was assaulted by three Ne groes, including the one in his car. As of yesterday officers had made no arrests in this case. They declared that although the, two victims were white and the assailants allegedly Negroes, the incidents were “disputes be tween particular people” and not incidents of general racial vio lence in the community. J. RAISING (Continued from page 2) but would prefer to alter their plans—as requested by local per* ■ons—and construct a 1,000-seat convention auditorium; Edss E- Scroggs, Planning Jp°*rd Chairman, expressed the opinion that his group would Ukely not recommend against ex tending the 90-foot limit to the ' business district. But he said he #flt that any alteration of these restrictions should be tied to off street parking requirements. The planners called attention to a proposed zoning amendment on off-street parking. The terms of this would require 50 more park ing spaces over the 129 now en visioned on the basis of the exist ing law for the 12&r00m hotel. It was noted, however, that the structure could be built legally as planned under terms of the existing zoning law. Realtor John Foushee also ap pealed for raising of the 45-foot' height restriction -— which was set as a fire safety precaution before purchase of a 100-foot ex , tension ladder fire truck. Mr. Foushee said, there was a need for multi-story efficiency apart ments in mid-town. Another real | tor, John Cates,- said that the j cost of main street - property I couldn’t be justified unless it j could be built higher than the existing limit. RETURNED FROM CALIF. Banner banter: If flag size told patriotism they'd surely have no peers If patriotism were directly in proportion to the physical dimensions of its symbols- the Warner Wells family would have no peers in devotion to country. ^ This is apparent in the size of the 50 - star American flag flown from the mast in the front yard of their Chapel Hill home on last Thursday, July 4. PasseriSby oh E. Franklin St. could scarcely suppress an optical double take at the massive star spangled banner that draped close to the ground from the tip of its 25-foot pole. Asked about the flag, Dr. Wells explained quite matter. of-factly that he and his fam ily had always wanted an A merican flag of their own. felt it was rather a nice thing to fly it on patriotic holidays, and simply bought one. That it happened to be a rather large flag didn’t seem a matter of particular sig nificance to the owners. On measuring it they established it to be eight and one-half by seventeen feet in size. Dr. Wells simply saw an ad ! for American flags in the Shopping Guide section of the Sunday New York Times. The price set by flag seller J. Ja cob Shannon in Philadelphia seemed quite reasonable. And upon order the battleship size flag came by parcel post. - If breeze enough to fully un furl the flag happened to came up, the massive tri-col or would fairly well blot out the sky in the Wells’ front i yard.
