They left from the bus station in a chartered vehicle at 2:15 a. m., expecting to arrive in the Capital about 8 a. m. 'Police,, guarding the quiet of the early morning hours, saw them off. THREE YOUTHS, ALL LESS than 15-years old, on French leave from Murdoch Training School in Butner broke into Jake’s Sunoco station late Tues day night. They apparently hoofed it from Butner to Dur ham where they allegedly stole three bicycles, which they rode to Chapel Hill. At the gas sta tion near Eastgate, they got some beer, candies and ice cream. THE ISSUE OF TOP ECHE Ion salary increases is indeed a matter of imminent concern for University officials at this time, as noted in press reports this week. Gov. Sanford has declared that some significent raises need to be given to faculty and odmin istrators at the higher levels.' And the salary of the Chancellor at Chapel Hill is of particular concern. But the point here is that the job itself carry a salary that will be attractive to the suc cessor to Chancellor Aycock next year. President Friday is expect ed to name a committee by the middle of next month to recom mend a person as Ayeock’s suc cessor. LOW BID OF $351,925.19 WAS submitted by C. C. Mangum, Inc., a Raleigh contractor, for con struction of the new access road into Hillsboro from Interstate 85. Bids were opened Tuesday and are subject to final approval by the Highway Commission on Sept. 5. In official jargon, the descrip tion of the project in a press re lease from the Commission: '‘*1,129 miles relocation of SR 1009 from a point just north of I 85, south of Hillsboro, thence in a northerly direction to a point south of Margaret Lane in Hills boro.” JAYCEES IN HILLSBORO will be operating the equipment in the Health Department mobile unit; for their first-sponsored event, a free Chest X-Ray Clinic, this coming Saturday in Hills boro. The new -Jaycees will get a quickie course of instruction at the HD tomorrow and then set up shop at the corner of King andfchurton Sts. from 9 to 5. They hope you’ll come.
