)nge Pealings A GLEAMING NEW YELLOW bus was pot into service for the first time yesterday by Chapel Hill Transit Co. Actually a reg ulation school bus, the $9,000 ve hicle will carry 66 children (44 adults) and win be used for a commercial run to carry local youngsters to Estes Hills School. The patriarchs of the lirie, the old blue buses, will not be fully retired, officials assured. They find it’s necessary to keep one, and preferably two, spares on band to keep one running all the time. ' SJWART NEW BLUE AND SIL ver badges are now being worn by Chapel Hill police patrolmen. Of entirely new design and con siderably larger than the previ ous metal emblems, they are the first actually new badges, the po licemen have had in many, many years. Previously they simply used hand-me-downs from the University guards for new town patrolmen. The complete set of hat shield and badge costs $23.50 each. A CHAPEL HILL AUTOMAT-! ic laundry operator complained to police this week that some body had apparently robbed his half-dollar change ^making ma chine of about $35. An investiga tor was dispatched to the scene. He dropped in a coin, turned the crank—and out came five * 50 cent pieces. Repeating the oper ation, he found that by turning the crank with just the right touch he could score five-for-one almost every time. —The opera tor emptied his over - generous device, hung an “out-of-order” sign on it, and waited for a service repairman. - - ^ HOUSEHOLDERS ACROSS the County were given a severe jolt at 10:04 a.m. yesterday as a jet aircraft flying overhead broke the sound barrier and caused-a double sonic boom—as the twin sound waves formed by the plane’s nose cone bounced along the ground. On this occasion there was little doubt as to the cause of the blast. The jet’s whine was clearly audible after the big noise. "PATRIOTS" whose nfcmes haye been talked about recently for the vacancy on the County Board of t Education include Reid 'Roberts of St, Mary’s, Paul Gates of Caldwell, Roger Marshall of Eno, and retired Chapel Hill Su perintendent ' of Schools C. W. Davis of the Union Grove com munity. The vacancy created by the recent resignation of Charles Walker will be filled by the Dem ocratic Executive Committee on Oct. 22. GOV. SANFORD HAS THIS week appointed Frank Umstead of Chapel Hill to the State Board of Mental Health — the field in which his father, former Rep. John Umstead, has been so in fluential for many years. IN PREPARING A LEGAL De scription of the downtown Chap el Hill school property for sale at public auction next month, at torney! J. Q. LeGrand was able to trace deeds to the land — in volving seven parcels originally — back to the year 1855. At that time the metes and bounds were simply described as bordering the land of adjoining residents. The original Chapel Hill school property, now the West Franklin Elementary School, was purchas ed from Mrs. Harriet Cole in 1815. Junior fire marshals have been appointed for the home rooms of every school in the Chapel Hill system. Later yesterday Chief Stewart took the Department s newly-re-constituted 1914 fire, truck to Clinton to help promote the organization of a junior fire marshal corps there.
