VOL. 71, NO. 41
HILLSBORO AND CHAPEL HILL. N. C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1963
| 'range Peaiings
A NUMBER OF STATE OFFI
cials, it is understood, are in
clined toward Hillsborough as a
site for the new conservatory for
the performing arts for the
Southern region, which was au
thorized by the State Legislature
. in the 1963 session. The commu
nity*^ illustrious background in
history and its proximity to the
cultural centers of Duke and the
7” University of North Carolina are
seen as strong points in its fa
r vor. Members of the Historic'
Hillsborough Commission and .
others have bee^in consultation
with planning committeemen and
students Of architecture at North
Carolina State in Raleigh, are pre
paring a comprehensive plan as
a class project, which might be
used as a part of a bW by this
community to the yet-to-be-ap
pointed trustees for location of
the school here. $650,000 in State
and foundation funds are avail
able during this biennium for es
tablishment of the school for 400
to 600 talented students of the
performing arts.
IT’S A BOY—OR IS IT A GIRL
— for L^fa and Valentina, the
bright green and yellow parrot
parents of a new feathered friend
in the roost of the Bob Logans
at Chapel Hill on Mondag of this
week. Mom and dad are genuine
Double-Knapped Amazon parrots
from Guatemala. Mr. Logan se
cured the five-year-old birds
about three years ago and has
been trying to get ’em together
in a family way since. This breed
lives, to be about 60-65-years-old
and the females have a gestation
period of about a month. Since
there were two eggs, the other
baby was expected to hatch mo
mentarily.' The AmasOffs'cart falk
in a skilled fashion, carry a
tune well, and have learned to
cry like human babies.
THE FACT THAT THE UNC
Department of Statistics is, ac
cording to our observation, the
first group or person to have the
local Zip Code number printed
on the return address portion of
its envelopes is no doubt attrib
utable to professional pride on
the part of the good mathemati
cians. Despite the myriad jin
gles, entreaties, and reminders
of postal officials we had not
previously seen a single printed
letter-head or printed envelope
that bore the requested Zip Code
v; at the end of the return address.
That the Department of Statistics
has been so appropriately obe
dient is only being true to its
calling in this great world of
'figures.
THE NAME OF FORMER DUR
ham Mayor E. J. (Mutt) Evans is
- being talked about a good deal
• in some Democratic circles of
Durham and Chapel Hill as. a
Congressional hopeful. Though
retired as a municipal official,
Mr. Evans is obviously far from
through with elective office. One
. school of rumor has it that he
will seek the Sixth District Con
gressional nomination if he does
not run for the State Senate from
Durham County.
COUNTY FORESTER JOHN
Harris said the danger of forest
fires in Orange County had drop
ped considerably as of yesterday,
despite the continued absence of
a soaking rain. Prior to Tuesday
the County had four successive
Class Four days—denoting unus
ually high fire danger. Yester-'
day and Tuesday were designated
as Class Two days.
A PROFIT OF MORE THAN
$1,350 was realized by the Chapel
Hill Art Guild on its annual
house tour and collectors show
held last Sunday. There were 908
paid admissions for the tour,
most of the trekkers being from
out of town. The Guild is consid
ering using the profits for pur
chase of art books and/or color
slides of paintings for the schools,
and possibly for supplementary
art instruction for pupils. The
David Browns, whose Glen Len
nox apartment was one of the 11
residences shown on the tour,
realized a fringe benefit. One of
collection of antique keys on dis
the visitors, seeing the Browns’
at his home that he’d be glad to
play, said he had a fine old key
give ’em.
PARTY-LINE CONVERSATION
over the beep of the telephone
busy-line signal is an every-eve
ning rage on the UNO campus'
currently. It seems that all per
sons who happen to dial a num
ber that is busy are in effect on
a party-line connection so long
as they hold the line,
