of orange county 24 PAOiS „ f CHRISTMAS MORNING WILL be far jollier for one Chapel Hill family through the generosity of a UNC student couple. Winners of a brand new bicycle in a Sat urday afternoon drawing at the W. T. Grant store, they called The News to ask if the newspa per knew of any children who needed a bike for Christmas. “We , have only a two-year-old baby, and we could sell the bicycle— but we thought somebody might really want it more,” explained the wife. A deserving recipient was easily found. And as a re sult, a youngster who was four days ago told he’d just as well forget about wanting a bike for Christmas will tomorrow have a brand new wheel all his own— courtesy of an anonymous Santa Claus couple. QUITE A NUMBER OF PER sons have sent in un solicited Christmas donations to the Chap el Hill Police Department, in rec ognition of their stellar overtime service during tfye Yule tide in handling the civil disobedience arrests. One husband and wife sent $125 — “in recognition of the considerable patience and re straint you have shown.” And the wife was one «f those arrest was accompanied by “Christmas greetings in appreciation of your devotion, to duty in a most trying time.” Yet another enclosed $25 —in lieu of a Community Chest donation — in appreciation of “selfless and devoted service.” ' A REPORT FROM THE INSTI tute of Government on its study of a public accommodations law for the Town of Chapel Hill is ex pected to be ready for the next regular (Jan. 3) meeting of the Board of Aldermen. It is specu lated that the report will ques tion the authority .of a munici pality to pass such an ordinance. Basis of this speculation is the fact that the Human Relations Committee last Friday issued a statement again strongly support ing passage of such a law, then Withdrew the statement pending consideration of it in light of the forthcoming report. Action on a public accommodations ordinance was tabled by the aldermen last June. The Institute of Govern ment study was requested in Au gust. 'V, • . Law prohib its their being jailed with adults (persons over 16). Generally they have , been detained in the police station until their parents come fbr them.
