Robbers removed the transmission from a car on the lot at Carpenter’s Chevrolet place in Durham re cently, but were apparently sur prised at the end of their pains taking thievery. They left the transmission . under- an adjoining vehicle. At Harriss-Conners last week they did the same thing, but successfully carted off their transmission-loot. CARRBORO OFFICIALS SAID yesterday that it was not true, as reported in the press Wednes day', that they had decided a gainst citing to court civil rights demonstrators who started an un authorized parade in CarrbOro last Saturday. “The matter is still under consideration,” said Mayor C. T. Ellington. “We are look ing at it carefully.” IT HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN by many that tihe Obaipel Hill ordinance regulating picketing was twice rejected by ’foe Chapel Hill aldermen when Chief of Po lice W. D. Blake sought its en actment in 1960. Finally mem bers of the group that staged the picketing protests against dis criminating business firms pre vailed on the Mayor's Human Relations Committee to ask fcr Passage of the law. That group did, and with die understanding that die picketers ~ 7J ‘«mselves wanted die ordinance enacted, the law was passed. The amend ment to it passed this week, ihaKing picketing hours at 7 p.m., was asked for by the chief for tf?e identical reason—safety of picketers. But it has not been supported by them this time. HOW MANY OTHERWISE PO litically-oriented Orange1 County voters know that their fellow cit izen, State Commissioner of In surance Ed Lanier, is the only member of the Council of State with opposition to date in the Democratic primary. Running against him is 44-year-old John B- Whitley of Statesville, an ag riculture teacher and a political unknown wfoo paid his $180 fil ing fee last week. UNC CAMPUS POLITICAL ■tempers are likely to erupt April 16-18 when the Young Republi cans and Young Democrats bat tle to nominate their U. S. pres idential and vice-presidential choices in mock political conven tions. About 1,000 delegates, rep resenting all 50 states, are to participate, and a number of na I tional party figures and Congres sional celebrities have been in vited.
