HILLSBONOUCH AND CHAPEL HILL, N. C., THURSDAY, MAY 14,1964 24 PAGES
A BIG TRAILWAYS BUS WITH
‘IStansbury tor Governor” ban
ners plastered all over the sides
and front was parked on court
house square all Tuesday morn
ing. As it turned out later the
vehicle had been chartered by a
class of Durham school children
on a sightseeing tour. They'd put
the banners on beforehand, and
bad the driver take them out to
their candidate’s corner grocery
in West iHllsborough for a soft
drink before they left Historic
Hillsborough.
N. C. NATIONAL BANK WAS

-THIS COMING SATURDAY
will be Armed Forces Day in
Chapel Hill according to an of
ficial proclamation with five
‘ whereas’* clauses as issued this
week by Mayor Sandy McCiam
roch. No special events, in addi
tion to the public notice, were
announced in connection with this
Statement.
JUST LIKE A TINY SNOW
ball gathers volume, a small
weak spot in the surface treat
ment on the first block of Hills
borough St. in Chapel Hill grew
to monumental proportions in
the 90-degree heat last Thurs
day.. Great patches of the syrupy
surface were pulled up by the
wheels of autos. Town officials
noted that the street was paved
last year by the State Highway
Commission with surface treat
ment process, over local protest.
The Town strongly prefers the
asphalt plant mix surface, with
which it has had no trouble.
When the street is re-surfaced,
they say, it will be with the lat
ter material.
ANOTHER NOTE FROM Mu
nicipal officials in Chapel Hill:
Please, they ask all household
ers, don’t pile trash in the gut
ters to be picked up by sanita
tion crews. It .washes into storm
drains during the rainy weather
and clogs both pipes and storm
drain grills.
CANDIDATES SPEAKING AT
the League of Women ' Voters
sponsored candidates forum last
night were gently but firmly no
tified of the expiration of the
three-minute time limit on their
speeches. The woman acting as
timer sat watch-inhand on the
front raw of the auditorium and
tinkled a dinner bell to signify
the limit for each speaker. AM
but two of the dozen candidates
on the stage went the limit. Some
were out off literally in mid-sen
tence and just prior to climactic
punch lines. But all accepted the
“gong" with good graces.
