POSSIBLE THEFT OF A
tombstone, an assortment of high
way signs, and some other equip
ment is being investigated by
Chapel Hill police in connection
with the discovery of these items
outside a rented flat. One tenant
questioned in the probe told a de
tective that one of two tomb
stones there came from a burial
plot on his family’s property, and
that he’d planned to make a bar
'v counter out of it. Another person
is yet to be questioned, police
said.
AFTER A TUMULTUOUS
marathon 170-minute public hear
ing on the Chapel Hill public
housing project controversy on
Tuesday night the District Plan
ning Board adjourned with six
other items on its printed agenda
un-considered, Board Chairman
said these would be taken up at
a special meeting, which may be
held tonight or Monday, depend
ing on when a quorum of the 10
member body can be gathered.
Up for consideration will be a
zoning committee report, subdivi
sion ordinance review, and dis
cussion of the limited business
zone.
THE THIRD OF THREE 30
minute “rallies” is scheduled at
7 o’clock “sharp” this evening in
front of South Building on the
University campus to discuss set
ting up a nationwide Acne Foun
dation. —At least that’s the no
tice carried in mimeographed
heralds floated around the cam
pus early this week, and signed
. by a summer session ‘ student.
“It’s high time ... to cut out this
—entirely unnecessary disease,"
declared the organizer. He pro
poses to do this by attacking, acne
“at its roots” through setting up
the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Adolescents.” (SPCA).
FIREMEN IN CHAPEL HILL
quickly doused two potentially
serious residential blazes this
past week. Last Thursday after
noon about $125 damage was
caused when a water heater ig
njted vapors seeping from a gaso
line can under an apartment at
521-A Hillsboro St. On Tuesday
afternoon fumes from lacquer
sealer being applied to freshly
ref hushed floors at a vacant
apartment at 508 North St. were
ignited from the pilot light of a
■water heater. The workmen look
ed around to see the flaming va
por moving toward him, a few
inches off the floor. Then his
bucket of the highly inflammable
liquid caught fire. However, dam
age was light in this case.
HERBERT McKAY OF CHA
pel Hill returned home Tuesday
from a two-weeks siege in Me
morial Hospital where lengthy
diagnosis revealed he was suffer
ing from a lung clot. He’s report
ed- to be convalescing all right,
feeling much better, and ready
to go back to work in a few days.
IT WAS STRICTLY A SPUR
of-the-moment put-up job, but
two local eggheads must still be
scratching their heads in puzzle
ment over a sotto voce conversa
tion they overheard in a local
restaurant last week. — Seems
the two were berating the right
wing tendencies of the Republi
cans and glorifying the cause of
political liberalism. At that point
one of their neighbors at the
next table declared to his com- <
panion in a stage whisper: “I’ll
tell you Julius, I just can’t go
along with that Goldwater. —He’s
too liberal for mei” ^
