Banks and postoffices j also will observe the legal holi day. At the latter, window serv-! ice and carrier deliveries will Be; suspended, but mail will be dis- j tributed to boxholders and spe cial delivery mail will be han dled. Holiday collection and nor mal dispatches will be the rule. County schools will be closed for the day while Chapel Hill and the University have not yet open ed the Fall terms. ONE INNOVATION FOR THIS Labor Day will be the elimina tion of the annual sale of prop erty liens for delinquent taxes at noon at the courthouse door. Tr stead, the tax sales will be helo at the same location at noon to morrow. The sale has been held on Labor Day since time imme morial, but tax officials, probab ly more anxious for a holiday than in previous years, have dis covered the first Monday in Sep tember date is not a legal re quirement. COUNTY BOARDS WHICH have first Monday meetings will meet on Tuesday instead. THE SCHEDULED FIRST BAT _tie of Orange between the foot ball teams of Hillsborough and Chapel Hill tomorrow night has been cancelled by Chapel Hill coaches because of the lateness of school opening in the city. The Panthers were unable to find an other opponent, so the game schedule will begin a week from tomorrow. SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS in the Town of Chapel Hill are strictly the responsibility of abut ting property owners. This is the tentative and informal decision Of the Chapel Hill Town Board & brief discussion of the matter recently. Interest was expressed in learning if and where proper ty owners might want to have sidewalk^ paved in town. Bob Peck, Town Manager, explained that this can be done by regular assessment procedure over ,five years. The Town is equipped to do a bit of the sidewalk paving work itself if residents are inter ested enough in petitioning for it, it was agreed. HONORS AT DAIRY SHOW—Nila Spencers 4-year-old Guernsey won the Grand Champion’s Tro phy at last, week’s Orange County Junior Dairy Show, thus continuing the winning tradition of the Guerns del Farm entry in this annual event. Nita, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spencer, who'manage the award-winning farm, also took fitting and showman ship honors. Six-year-old Guernsdel Alice unrs last year’s Grand Champion. Nita has been active in 4-H and school programs, has won ribbons galore for sev eral years. Story on Page 7. /
