Heary Trading In Dennis.
Some few weeks ago John H.
Fulton came over to Winston
from Dennis. While in the city
a certain livery man induced John
to carry a windbroken mule
away from the stable. After
Johnny reached home the right
honorable A. G. Martin, J. P.,
saw the mule and agreed to give
Johnny a $23 cutaway harrow
if "he would let him have the
mule. Johnny hesitated a mo
ment, and finally agreed to the
proposition. Martin led the
mule away, exulting over his
good trade. Next day Martin
came back to Dennis and pro
tested to Johnny that the - old
mule had a broken windpipe and
was therefore unable to swallow.
Johnny heard his tale of woe
and told him he would allow him
under the circumstances to carry
back the harrow, but that he
could also keep the mule, as they
were bretheren in the lodge.
Martin shouldered -his harrow
and strode away toward home.
When he reached his home that
evening he was met at the gate
and told that his mule was dead.
The question arises, who really
was cheated in that trade.

A Peculiar Guinea.
Mr. C. W. Parrish, out at
Walkertown, N. C, has a guinea
hen eleven years of age that is
Bomewhat peculiar. The hen
lay 8 eggs yet and is as gentle as
a cat. On cold mornings the
guinea will walk into the house,
lay down in front of the fire with
its feet as close to the fire as it
can comfortably stand and remain
in that position until it gets
thoroughly warmed, when it will
C7 -
go out into the yard and parade
around with the chickens until
its feet get cold, when it will
come back into the house and go
through the same operation.
Some of papers are wanting to
know if playing euchre is gam
bling. Course it is. There is
just as much gambling in Mrs.
So-and-so winning a cut glass
cake dish as there is in a man
raking off a hundred dollar jack
pot in a game of poker. The
only difference is, one is plain,
every-day gambling, while the
