The season ot the year for settle ment is now well upon us anJ I HI-. TRIBI NK would be gl.id to have all of its accounts dosed with the year. Many of these we have carried quite a good deal longer than we ever in tended, and these we are exceedingly anxious to get closed up, both as to the Daily and Scmi-WeekK. We have accounts to meet and these must be met regardless of what those who owe us may do. We hope that our patrons will call and settle at onie. Christmas to many means drunk why, can only be answered by saying it's their way. Many of us think that it would be a poor season without a little booze. The truth of the matter is there is no more excuse for a deliberate drunk Christmas than any ordinary season. Many a man sips his dram only at Christmas, while many a would-be sport lays off twelve months ahead to tank up. The truth of the matter is it's a bad idea to spoil such a season with grog, thought it's useless to say so, for it's a firmly established custom with many and it's coming be fore January 1st, is the Christmas drunk. Nan Patterson may and she may. not be guilty. Be that as lit may Caesar Young came to the end frequently set aside for such characters. There are some undertakings a man enters with his life in his hand. Young went the road leading by the house of trouble and before he passed he was a dead man. Sympathy usually lands on the woman's side, and perhaps it's best. In such cases the world gener ally accepts the result as a natural con sequence and refuses to loose sleep or time over the matter. The shopper only has a few days in which to conclude. Only two-, more days, but as a rule thtre is plenty do ing at the last hour. The report that Tom Dewey had f .., , . .. -: .- been caught -proved -a -false alarm. Tom is a sly fox today as he has been '-all along. 'And the prospects are that Concord will do good growing in llD. .. Death of Mrs. Thomaason. : ' '. r',- Mrs. M. A. Thomasson, relict of h late Tohn R. Tbomassoo. - and a sister to Mr. John A. WIipii ilw Mini Las veritablv tlrawu near to such a being, beauty id no longer a lovely, lifele tiling that uc exhibits to the stranger, for it suddenly takes unto itself an imperious existence and hi activitv becomes so natural as to be liemefortli IRRESISTI BLE. As we wander front the gods within so does ugliness enwrap us as wo dit-eover tliem. But it is only by revealing the divine that is in us THAT WE IAY DISCOVER THE DIYIXE IX OTHERS. Xeeds imi-t one god beekmi to another, and m -igiial is so impercepti ble but they will every one of them respond. It cannot be said too often that, be the eivvire never so small, it will vet stillice for all the waters of heaven t- pour into our soul. EVERY ('IT IS STRETCHED Ol'T t.. the unknown spring, and we are in a region where none thinks of aught but beauty. If we could ask of an angel what it i that our mmiU do in the bhadow. I believe the angel would an.-wer, after having looked for manv rears, perhaps, and seen far more than the things of the soul seem to do in the eyes of men: "THEY TRANSFORM INTO BEAUTY ALL THE LITTLE THINGS THAT ARE GIVEN TO THEM." We must admit that the human soul is posted of .singular cour age. Resignedly docs it labor its whole life hmg in the darkness jvhither most of us relegate it, where it is spoken to by none. There, never complaining does it do all tear out of the pebbles we throw to it the int. -lens of EI EkAL LICHT that peradventure they eoutain. And in the midst of its work it is ever lying iu wait for the mo ment when it may show to a siter who is more tenderly eared for or who chance's to be nearer the treasures it has so t-.il fully amassed. 1 hit thousands of existences tin re are that no sister visits, thou sands of cxbtenees wherein life ha infused such timidity into the soul that IT DEPARTS WI THOUT SAYI.NC A WORD, with out even once having been able to deck itself with the humblest jewel-; of its hund'le crown. w And vet in spite of it all does it wateh over everything from its invisible heaven. It warns and loves, it admires, attracts, repels. AT EVERY FRESH EVENT DOES IT RISE TO THE SURFACE, WHERE IT LINGERS TILL IT BE THRUST DOWN AGAIN, BEING LOOKED UPON AS WEARISOME AND INSANE. It wanders to and fro, like Cassandra at the gates of tho AtrideS; It is ever giving utterance to words of shadowy truth, but THTJRE, ARE .VOXE TO 1. 1ST EX'. When we raise our eyes it yearns for a ray of sun or star, that it may weave into a thought or, haply, an impulse, which shall be conscious and very pure. And if our eyes bring it nothing, still will it know how to turn its pitiful disillusion into something ineffable, that it will conceal EVEN" TILL ITS DEATH. WHEN WE LOVE, HOW EAGERLY DOES IT DRINK IN THE LIGHT FROM BEHIND THE CLOSED DOORI KEEN WITH EXPECTA TION, IT YET WASTES NOT A MINUTE, AND THE LIGHT THAT STEALS THROUGH THE APERTURES BECOMES BEAUTY AND TRUTH TO THE SOUL. But if the dor open not it will go back to its prison and its regret will perhaps be a loftier verity that shall never be seen, for we are now in the regions of transformations whereof none may speak, and, though nothing born this side of the door 'can be lost, YET DOES IT NEVER MINT.
