JAMES F. HURLXT. Editor and Maoafsr. Uncord, N. C, Nov. 2, 1909. The dangers attending football were farther emphasized by tbe death of Oatlet Bryne of the West Point team last-Saturday. Young Bryne was killed in the game with Harvard and it is likely that there will be mo more foot ball with the army students this year. It is also probable that the deplorable accident will tend to curtail football to some extent with all schools and colleges. Football is a clever and manly game and there is much good to he had from it. This is true of all clean athletics which should be en couraged with all schools to the end that the body may be cultivated and strengthened along with the mind. But the thing is overdone. The boy enters college and at once the foot hall schedule is arranged. He U put through a few examinations at the close of the term, dismissed for two weeks holiday and then he makes up the Spring schedule of bast-ball. So much of this, and so completely is the mind engrossed in these schedules that there is scarcely time enough left to write home, much less study. Not a word have we against sport which train the body, build up health ami make muscles strong. Every school should have athletics. We are willing to pay a little more tax to equip our eity schools with an outdoor gymna sium and give them a physical instruc tor, but this thing of boys spending all their time running around over the eountry playing for the gate receipts ought to be stopped, certainly to a large extent. The boys tha remain on the campus are as mueh demoralized as the "team" that spends weeks off the college campus playing ball. A great many parents send their boys to allege to study other thingsthan foot ball and baseball and it is about time that they have this chance. We do not believe any father would want bis son to go to a school that offered no physical culture, but the average father wants something else 'than is offered by twelve weeks of ball sche dules with other schools. Editor Harris, of the Charlotte Chronicle, thinks we are talking about the old broom fields he played in many years ago. Broom Corn is different from the old sedge field production, and the editor of the Chronicle ought to know better than to get his wires so 'badly crossed. To Conserve the Nation's Resources. Mew Orleans, La., Nov. 1. Be lieving that the time has come for definite action looking to the conser vation of the nation's great natural reseourees, leaders in this movement form all parts of the country have gathered here and today are taking the first steps toward putting the principles" of conservation into prac tical effect. The governors and the chairman of conservation commissioners of 14 (Southern States, Clifford JPuxhot, chief forester and chairman of tbe joint committee on conservation, J. D. White, i chairman of the executive committee of the National Conserva tion Congress, and otters will take part in tbe proceedings. The delibera tions of the convention will lave an important bearing on conservation ia all parts of the country, particularly in the South. Indeed, any comprehensive plan of waterway improvement, even though it may be primarily for navigation purposes, must take into considera tion the use of the waters for irriga tion, water power and domestic sup ply. Lasting waterway improvement depends largely on the conservation of forests to protect the head waters and protect soil erosion." Serious Situation in Kentucky- Troops Galled Out. Jaekon, Key., Nov. 1. Because there are ominous portents of trou ble in Jackson and Banett county on election day, tomorrow, 22 members of the Lexington milita are encamped here and Governor Wilson is hurrying to Frankfort from the Waterways Convention at New Orleans. Advices in Jackson are that a mes sage from Frankfort to the governonr a' as laconic and startling: "Hell has broken loose in Breathitt." As some of tbe bloodiest affairs in the history of Kentucky have been fought in Jackson on political occas ions, the State authorities have wast- .1 on time in putting the town u.ider military surveillance. Circuit Judge J. P. Adams, Repub lican candidate for re-election against D. B. Rcdwinc, of Sandy Hook, Elliott county, sent a call for troops to the actin ggovernor, W. H. Cox, last nigt, declaring there were large forces of armed men espousing the resj)ective Republican and Democratic causes, that the coutny officials were power less and that a fight was imminent. Jaekeon, K.V., Nov. 1. A special train with milita on board arrived be fore daylight. Detachments will be ent today to Crockettsville, War Creek, Sebastiue Branch, Oakadale and other precincts where trouble is feared. This is the second time an election has been held in Breathitt county under protection of State troops. Scarcity of Turkey. Ohio State Journal. Thanksgiving turkeys will be scarce this year and high in price and some f us thankful people will have to do without them. That will be a little difficult, for Thanksgiving and turkey o together like boys and girls. But lliere is no need to be tlisgruntled at ur own fault. We have the fields, and the sushine and the grasshoppers. ind if we do not have enough turkeys it is because we are trifling away our -nergies on less important things. Chickens, ducks, tenderloins will be scarcer, too, and prices higher. But the spirit of Thanksgiving is equal to any emergency. There are nany things in which it will have a jubilant voice. Everything good hits Thanksgiving. There "are boiled beef :vnd cabbage, ohine of swine and turn ips, big snowy roily polly apple dump lings, stuffed pickerel and pumpkin pie enough to any man thankful, who lias a heart in him as big as a walnut. But where are the turkeys f Is the ?lory of this Mfe dropping behind! Are the farmers losing their grip t Are the farmers' wives so absorbed in Paris fashions that they are forgetting the turkeys t The market reports from the East say there are 25 per sent fewer turkeys this year than last, and more people to eat them. Raise turkeys. Plant them in the waste places. Let them cover the fallow ground. Let ns have less of every thing and more turkeys. WHY SALVES FAIL TO CUBE ECZEMA. They Clog the Pores Only a Uqtdd Can Reach the Inner Skin. Since tbe old-faebioned theory of euring eczema through the blood has been given op by scientists, many dif ferent salves have been tried for skin diseases. " But it bas been found that these salves only clog the opres and ean not penetrate to the inner skin below, the epidermis where the eczema germs are lodged. This the quality of penetrating' probably explains the' tremendous success of the only standard liquid eczema cure, oil of wiatergreen as compounded in D. D. D. Prescription. After ten years of care after cure, the world's leading skin epeeialtists have accepted this as the true ecsema enre. We ourselves & wot iesitsis to recommend D. D.-D.
