Religion In The Here And Note
Rev. Norvin C. Duncan
Today this column wishes to salute two peo
ple who celebrated on June 12, their fiftieth
wedding anniversary. Their, pictures in the
JOURNAL reflect the deep satisfaction of folks
who made a happy home and served their
community faithfully and helpfully. The satis
faction which must be theirs is richly deserved.
Their business was not only a means for mak
ing a living, but the channel of communication
of themselves, their warm hearts ad gracious
spirit, to all the aspects of life in the community
in which they lived.
Of course, we refer to Mr. and Mrs. M. H.
Hoyle, and the gentleman in the picture carries
the expression on his face of a man who is saying
to himself; "I sure was a lucky man to get the
most wonderful girl in the world, am! to be bless
ed with her companionship for fifty years." The
lady does not seem to be displeased with her
choice of a mate.
There are people who are refreshing, inspi
rational, and uplifting by just being what they
are, and the Hoyles can be listed in this cate
gory - as the many people attending the cele
bration bore witness.
Mr. Hoyle, as Druggist, came along at a
time when the drug store was a sort of commu
nity center, where there was real fellowship over
a coke, ice cream, or milkshake, and all the
more enjoyable because of the friendly spirit of
the Druggist and his associates. Mr. and Mrs.
Hoyle have been active in their Church life, and
in all community organizations which looked to
the promotion of the well-being of the communi
ty.
We would like to add our voice and our
prayers to the thousands in Cooleemee and sur
rounding area, in offering congratulations upon
the happy occasion, and to wish them many more
years in which to rest, and reflect upon a life
well spent in usefulness, knowing that they have
put into the lives of many people something of
a spiritual quality which will live In many hearts
long after they are gone.
