During the last two weeks
the North Carolina Register of
Deeds have been tngaged in a
Statewide series of Regional
Workshops on the Uniform
Commercial Code. These re
gional meetings, held in
Gtoaenville, Goldsboro, Gra
ham, StatesviUe and AshesviLLe
were sponsored jointly by the
Secretary of State, N. C. Reg
isters of Deeds Association and
the Institute of Government.

dates the law of secured tran
sactions as it relates to per
sonal property. The Secretary
of State and the Registers of
Deeds have been designated
as filing officers under the
Cod?. After midnight June 30,
1967, the effective date of the
Code, the filing of Financing
Statements will replace the
previous practice of recording
chattel mortgages, conditional
sales contracts and similar in
struments.
As a result of the regional
workshops and careful study
|of the volume of expected fil> \
*n«9, ithe Secretary of State
and «he Register of Deeds
have agrsed upon a pre-filing
period beginning June 1. All
filings received in the offices
of the Secretary of State and
the Registers of Deeds with
the appropriate fee will be
accented after May 11 for
proceeding, and wiH be filed
as of the opening of busi
ness following the effective
(tat* of (he Code. All filings
received prior to midnight
May 81, 19€7, will be return
ed to the sender.
Filings received during this
pre-filing period do not per
fect security interests arising
out of transcations entered
into before the effective date
of the code. Prior to the ef
fective date, security interests
can be perfected only in ac
cordance with the established
law in effect prior to Judy

be prepared and filed during
tto pre-filing period for any
transactions which will be en
tered into after the close of

New Firm To
Jointly Own

Mr. Ralph W. Ketner, Presi
dent of Food Town Stores,
Inc. announced today the in
corporation of a new firm to
be jointly owned by Food
Torwn Stores, Inc.; Food Line
of Asheboro; and Heffner's
Tj»m4 of Food, Mocksville. Alt
the present these three firms
own and operate 16 super
markets within a 65 mile ra
dius of Salisbury.
The new firm Save-RKe, Inc.
was formed for the purpose
of buying; warehousing; and
distributing groceries and re
lated items to the stores own
ad by the three parent com
panies. The combined buying
power of these 16 supermark
ets assure Save-Rite, Inc. of
being one of the largest in
dependently owned groups in
North Carolina.
Headquarters for the new
firm will be in Salisbury at
the Warehouse Location on
Julian Road. Officers, other
than Ketner are Russell Walk
er, President of Food Lines,
and Chen Heffner, President
of Heffner's Land of Food
