Santa Claus is coining to town—at the very end of Salisbury's giant Holiday Caravan, the largest" Jayeee sponsored holiday parade in the nation, which wul usher in the Christmas season Wednesday. Final arrangements for the caravan were made last night at a meeting of the Holiday Caravsn board at the Mer chants Association offices. The parade will begin at 4 o'clock next Wednesday in Spencer and re-group to begin at 5 o'clock in Salisbury. Lunchroom Course Completed By 38 Thirty-eight 'employes of the fftlflfll HlM* the supervision of Mrs. Maris Haynee, completed a 00-hour course this week in 'Overview of School Food Service/ The course, conducted through Davidson County Community College, was taught by Mary Jane Larabee of the Thomasvill ecity school hmcb rooms. The series of lessons hi 'Overview' was deigned to present a more thorough un derstanding of the over-all operation of echool food asrvics. The S3 marching units will include all local nigh school bands as well as those from nearby schools and the outstan ding Hargrave Military Academy and East Rutherford High School bands. The East Rutherford band is the first place winner in notional marching high school band competition and, therefore, con sidered the top high school band in the nation. It will lead the Keaton, Nellie Klmmer, Janie s«f>h Laird, Edith Lapish, Polly Latham, Laura Lee, liiw* Markland, Nell Moore, Mamie Phifaff* . Frances Gilcher, Catherine Privette, Mary Scott, Rata Shoaf, Rada Spry, Elmer Wall, Mary Williams, Lillian Willisana, Cedherine Wood, and Gertie Couch. The Holiday Caravan will have more than SO floats in the march this year, which is the largest number in its history, >ind there will be about 145 nlate, local and festival queens, including Didi- Anstett of Seattle, Washington, who is the currently reigning Miss USA. Also among the Beauties in the parade will be Miss Rhododendron, Miss Southern 900, Miss North Carolina, Miss South Carotins, Miss Georgia, Miss Virginia, and those from all the surrounding towns. . A particular feature of the parade this year will be giant comedy heads of papier mache, similar to those seen in the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Citizen* Chib held Its regular meeting on Monday in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church with 06 members present. The meeting was opened by president M. H. Rkfenbour. Mr. C. W. Shepherd, chaplain, led the devotions. He spoke on taith and thanksgiving concerning the "Ten Virgins, The Faithful and the Unfaithful," and asked the question "How Thankful are each of us?" Mr. Dolan Hedrick of the Cooleemee Super Market donated a SIOO check to the club for their Christmas party, which will be held at the December meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bowen, owners of the Western Auto* Store, also donated four bams, four turkeys and three pounds of coffee for the party. The bread will be donated by Sunbeam Bakeries. The Civic Club will host a party for the Senior Citizens on Tuesday, December 3 at the Recreation Center, beginning at 7 p.m. Mr. Chuck Beidler introduced guest speaker, Mr. Cy Cooley, manager of Erwin Mills. Mr. Cooley spoke to the club on "What Dies Inside of a Man While he Lives." He also com mented that all ages must move along with time and accept changes. He then pointed out some of the fhangAg that had taken place at the Erwin Mills Plant, such as converting from coal to gas, which was a great improvement in al2 depart ments. Mr. Cooley also told the he wanted his employees "to work, not harder, but smarter." He then announced that the m would cease operations for an entire week at Christmas.
