-€n ill iMI i TOVRI. nuirtii 30, I*B. 10 9ROAMIN DAVIE AND VKINITY with MACK McKA Yesterday when I was sorting oat some old papers and dippings of daily columns of the past, and throwing some of them in a waste basket, the head of one column "hit me between 'the eyes", so I saved it. The head said: "A trip to Cookemee and MocksyiDe is always a colorful adventure", so I thought ft might be a good idea for a column in the Hurley boys' papers in Davie County I used to spend one day a week up in Davie and always enjoyed the trip ... Friend Ralph Miller of the Salisbury Post is now doing a much better job 19 there than 1, because be spends more time with these good. people The above Davie column dealt with me covering the sensational trial of a Wilkes County man in Davie Superior Court, with Judge Hoyle Sink presiding. The defendant was being tried for his life, but I don't remember the charge. The defendant had two polished Wilkes and Winston-Salem lawyers and a lawyer from Mocksville ... the out-of-town lawyers kept disregarding Judge Sink's warnings against them "taking over the trial," by repeating questions after the judge had over-ruled them. I knew what was going ito happen, when Judge Sink belted his desk with his gavel several times. There was a long silence ... then Judge Sink delivered a five minute oration, the likes of which I had never heard in a court room. He did net raise his voice, but his satire and stern wit cut like a knife I wrote it down, word for word, and used it in my Post i'ory, then put the clipping away among my souvenirs in my desk. It was the "best put" advice to over-dressed and to-zealous lawyers I ever heard. Suffice it to say the* the trial moved along smoothly, in regular and orderly fashion thereafter. Now, my memory is hazy many times at age 77 and I would like to clear up some details of that trial. Does anybody in Davie County know the name of that defendant, and what was the charge against him, and what was the verdict. It must have taken place in the late 1940 s or the early 'so's. If so please write me at, Mack McKa, 217 East Ryder Avenue, Landis, N. C. Zip 28088. TRASHY PROBLEMS? Coll BECK 284-3981 mm# v!
