Davie Girls, Boys Win Openers Cooleemee Journal Jaycette Welcome Wagon The Cooleemee Jaycettes have this week undertaken the Welcome Wagon project. All newcomers to the community are asked to contact Mrs. Aub rey Wensil or Mrs. Flake Black wood. The Welcome Wagon, spon sored by local merchants, will present to all newcomers, pack ets containing information of all major activities in the com munity and also, gift certificates from the participating mer chants. Anyone learning of new comers to Cooleemee, please contact one of the local Jay cettes so they may officially welcome them. Hairdressers Fashion Show The Davie County Hairdressers Association will sponsor a fashion show at the Center Community Building on Monday, March 10, at 8 p.m. Models will display all types of hair styles. Many door prizes will be given away and favors will be presented to everyone. Tickets may be purchased from any beautician in Davie County for only 50 cents. The public is cordially invited. World Prayer Day The World Day of Prayer will be held Friday, March 7, at the Cooleemee United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. Everyone from all churches is cordially invited. Captain Clyde Roberts Wounded In Vietnam Mrs. Joan Pierce Roberts, formerly of Cooleemee and now living in Fayetteville, received word Satruday that her husband, Capt. Gyde Roberts, was grounded when engaged by enemy fire while serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam. According to information given the Journal by Capt. Roberts' mother-in-law, Mrs. John Pierce of 38 Duke Street, he was wounded in the right arm and hand and both legs on Tuesday, February 25. After receiving treatment and surgery in the Field Hospitals, he was evacuated to the U.S. Army Hospital in Japan where he is awaiting further surgery. Additional information concerning Capt. Roberts' condition will be published as soon as the Journal is notified. Capt. Roberts was born in Keyser, West Virginia, but says Cooleemee is home. He has over 10 years service with the U.S. Army and is a 1964 graduate of O.C.S. He has spent over nine years of his career as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and Special Forces. Capt. and Mrs. Roberts have two sons, Randy, 11, and David, 9. Anyone interested in sending a card or writing to Capt. San Francisco, 96343 12 Pages 10 Cents Davie Marine Killed In Vietnam Elvie Bell Jr., 23, of Kt. 4, Box 255, Mocksville, c corporal with the U.S. Marine Corps, was killed Friday while serving on a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was born Oct. 21, 1945, in Davie County, son of Mr. and M;s. Elvie Bell Sr. of Mocksville. Educated at Davie County High School, Livingstone College, and Rowan Technical Institute, he enlisted in the Mrrine Corps in June of 1966 and went to Vietnam on Feb. 3, 1958. Also surviving are three brothers, James W. Bell, sta tioned in Korea with the U.S. Army, and Bobby G. Bell and Larry Allan Bell, both of the home; and ths maternal grandfather, Lindsry Flint of Rt. 4. Mccksville. Funeral arrangements are in ccmp.ete. The bcdy will he brought to the Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home. Tourney Underway At Davie The Davie girls will play North'lredell in the semi-finals of the North Piedmont Con ference tournament at Davie High tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. If they defeat North Iredell, they will face the winner of the South Iredell-North Stanly game in the finals Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Davie boys played North Stanly in the second game of the semi-finals Tuesday night. A victory would send them into the finals Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of the North Rowan-Mooresville game. The Davie l>oys. winners of the North Piedmont Conference title with a 15-1 conference record defeated West Rowan. 54-4(5.
