You Can't Lick It
Any gardner or home owner who takes pride in
bis lawn knows how tough Johnson grass is to deal
with. It grows every place but where you want it and
is the dickens to get rid of.
Giles M. Murph of Rt. 1, Woodleaf has some in his
garden, as the above picture demonstrates.
That tenacious, tough, hard-to-get-rid-of grass just
grew right through this potato.
As the old saying goes, Johnson grass will grow
anywhere. And in this case Mr. Murph's potatoes
didn't even stand in the way.

Water On Moon?
(AP) The Apollo 11 astro
nauts may be bringing back
some water from the moon.
Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. drove a
hollow tube into the moon's sur
face during his lunar walk. '
He told mission control Just
after withdrawing the tube that
the soil seemed "almost wet."
If the dirt Indeed is wet, it
may mean there is life in some
form on the moon.
S. Holman, MocksviUe, vice
president; Harold Foster,
Coofeemee, treasurer; Melvin
Martin, MocksviUe, secretary;
and directors Lonnie Howell,
Frank Davidson, and Dewey
Parks, all of MocksviUe.
David County Federal Credit
Union is the second credit union
to be put into operation in the
county. The other is now serv
ing an industrial plant in
MocksviUe.
At a meeting of the credit
union's board of directors held
recently, John Hardy pointed
out that the new organization
will not be in competition with
industrial credit unions.
Vernon Thompson, president
added that industrialists in the
county have indicated they
welcome the credit union to
the county and will cooperate
with its founders. Referrals
from industry, he pointed out,
could play a major role in the
success of the organization.
The credit union's board of
directors is on the lookout for
a suitable office location,
necessarily one centrally
located and easily accessible
to everyone. The site, opening
hours and ether pertinent fac
tors have not yet been ironed
out.
Membership in the credit
union costs $5. To obtain a
loan a person must hold
membership.
The real basis for credit
unions, as pointed out by Hardy,
is to promote thrift, systematic
savings, and low cost loans.
The more people who
participate and save, the better
the credit union.
Initiators of the credit union
hope that individuals and
businesses with money to invest
will take advantage of the
credit union for this purpose,
thereby helping the low-income
segment of the county, to obtain
low cost loans while at the
same time drawing a return
on their investment.
Since credit unions are non
profit corporations, no interest
Is paid on the investments.
However, dividends will be
declared at the end of each
year. Dividends range from
four to a maximum or six per
cent. In North Carolina, the
average credit union dividend
is in excess of five per cent.
