Davie's Martha Ann Barney Nominated For Scholarship GREENSBORO Miss Mar tha Ann Barney of Route 3, Mocksville, is one of 13 high school seniors from seven area counties who will be inter viewed here Wednesday, Feb. 4, by the Katharine Smith Rey nolds Scholarship Committee from District Five. The 13 young women will be Mrs. Davidson's Fifth Grade Visits Center Mrs. Vallie S. Davidson and 29 fifth grade students from William R. Davie Elementary School were special guests ol the Salisbury-Rowan-Davie Supplementary Educational Center on Wednesday, January 29, Each of the 4 Center Special ists, James B. Lloyd, William W. Suggs, Mrs. Beatrice H. Blount, and Mrs. Thelma V. Hamilton, assisted the teacher in her daily schedule of Social Studies, Space Science, Nature Studies and Art. Mrs. Davidson taught the boys and girls other subject matter during the day that she would have taught had they been in their own class room. They had a planetarium program and saw the current African Printmaker exhibit in the Center Art Gallery. competing for a Reynolds Schol arship to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The scholarship will be worth $6,400 for four years of study at UNC-G. Mrs. Walter Abbe 111 of Win ston-Salem is chairman of the committee which will select two district finalists. The district finalists will be interviewed in Greensboro March 16 by the Reynolds Scholarship Central Committee. Jaycettes Valentines Dance Set Next Sat. The annual Valentines dance, sponsored by the Cooleemee Jaycettes. will be held Satur day, February 14, at the Cool eemee Gymnasium beginning at Bp.m. until 11 p.m. The entertainment will be provided by the "Absolute Mi nority Group." a combo from Statesville. A Valentine Sweetheart will be crowned by last years win ner, Miss Annette Eckerd, dur ing the evening. The Reynolds Scholarships were established in 1962 by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem in memory of Katharine Smith Reynolds, wife of the founder of the Reynolds Tobacco Company, an alumna of UNC-G, and mother of the late R. J. Cooleemee Man Named Davie County Manager MOCKSVILLE - John Bar ber of Cooleemee is the first county manager of Davie Coun ty- Barber. associated with Bur lington Industries, was hired as the first official county man ager during yesterday's meet ing of the Davie County Com missioners. Barber, who worked at the Erwin Mills plant until the re cent closing presumably will assume office in his new capac ity after working a notice with the company. Commissioners voted una miously to hire Barber as coun ty manager, who will in the job coordinate all county offices and functions. Commissioners previously had set up a SIO.UUO item in the budget in anticipation of hiring a fulltime manager. Barber's "office" will be a shared arrangement in the county accountant room, specif ically because no vacant space exists for a private office in the courthouse In other action yesterday, commissioners re-appointed for one year terms the Davie Coun ty Fire Commission members including Wade Groce, Andrew Lagle.
