Modern House of Tomorrow
WiM Have Cooling Plant
for Summer and Fur
nace for Winter
Cambridge, Mass., Sept 23.?"Shut
the windows, turn on the electricity
and keep cool."
That may be the procedure follow
ed in the future by those whose ener
gies do not respond to the high tem
peratures of the summer months. For
the modern houses of tomorrow will
have a cooling plant just as the mod
em house of today has a furnace be
lieves Professor Edward F. Miller,
head of the department of mechanical
engineering at Massachusetts Insti
tute of Technology.
"The increased demands upon hu
man energy in this age of swift prog
ress and keen competition call for new
measures for physical comfort and
protection," said Professor Miller.
"Extreme- summer heat shows human
activity and lowers efficiency in all
branches of endeavor, whether it oe
in factory, office buiding or home.
"The household furnace has over
come the cold of winter, but human
ity still suffers from summe^ heat.
It seems likely that within a few
days cool rooms in which to work
and live will be considered just as
much a necessity as-warm homes and
buildings are in winter.
"It is not a serious problem now to
produce air conditioning and cooling
plants for domestic purposes. Those
will consist of a refrigeration system
in w^iich air will be cooled and the
moisture removed before it is put in
to circulation in the building. *
' "Air conditioning .and cooling
equipment ife best adapted for build
from outdoor Instead of opening all
windows and doors as is now done in
summer they will be closed. Double
windows probably will be used a&i
the air in the building will be used
over and ofcer again after being
washed and cooled.
"The home cooling and air condi
tioning plant of the future ^ill func
tion with no more attention than the
electric refrigerator. It also will be
?-'-!UwL?J ' "iix f r-1. I'wymrjnr _.
aperated by electricity and will be I
equipped with thermostat control to *
maintain an even, comfortable tem
perature regardless of the beat out- LI
doors."
