; number of representative women of

Farmvilfe met in the auditorium of '
? * T- f
the high school building aiuhorganized 1
a woman's club with about 25 mem- .
bers. The meeting was presided over ,
by Mrs. J. M. Hobgood. Mrs. R. R. j
Cotten and Miss Annie Perkins made '
strong talks concerning woman's club '
work. Mrs. Cotten especially empha- '
sized the need of organized woman- !
hood in all things, especially in the|:
matter of ' upholding high and right
ideals by taking advantage of their 1
privilege to vote. She urged' the '
women to know the men who are can
didates for election this fall and to '
find out whether or not they intend to
vote for the bt'ls which are sponsored !
by the women's organizations, and ?
then vote accordingly. The organiza- *
lion of the club was perfected with '
four departments-under consideration,]'
Music, Art, American Citizenship jand j'
! Public Welfare. ' '
The following officers were elect
ed: President, Mrs. J. M. Hobgbod; 1
honorary president, Mrs. Cotten; vice
president, Mrs. W. M. Bryan; record- j
ing secretary, Mrs. John Hooker; cor-1
| responding secretary, Mrs. J. G. Spen- 1
jeer; treasurer, Miss Tabitha DeVis- I
conti. <
A membership committee was ap
pointed and urged to get busy. A large
membership is expected and the club I
intends to bo a vital, helpful force in i
1 the various, spheres in which it is, I
' sorely needed in the town. M

DETOURS-A BAD f
ROAD BUtjLDER.
Women of the fifteenth District of J

'Dear Mrs. Hobgood: T-i
"I am in receipt of your letter aslo? \
ing for information relative to the; j
roads to Belhaven, N. C., where your 1
meeting will be held on October 14. i
[ thoroughly agree with you that the j
letours are tedious and dusty and to- 3
jether wi+ltyi rain would make them 1
muddy. One thing I find in trying to j
ronstruct better roads, are the trou- <
L?les of detours. As has been said by !
some one, 'The Americans can con- ?
struct a very" good road, but that 1
Frenchman, Detour, is about the worst 1
road builder that we have in North j
Carolina.* <
"The only detour you will have be- <
sween Washington and Belhaven at 1
,hat time will be by the way of Acre '<
station, turning to your left on a dirt I
road, about seven and a half miles J
:rom Washington, following the \ de- '
tour signs unti yoh get on the hard J
surface road to" Belhaven. I shall J
jfve instructions to have the detour in ;
she best possible shape on that day. <
"Wishing for you a successful i
meeting of youy district clubs, |
"Sincerely yours,
"F. C. KUGLER." ? J

will let that little detour frighten \
them and that there will be a arge <
