farmville churches .... a crown to the community StrivinK f?r the attainment of an atmosphere of godly living, of peace and goodwill, the churches of Farm ville, in their uplifting ministries are constantly and consistently en deavoring to upbuild the character of the citizenship, acting as a moral stimulus in the development of the town, and rendering an invaluable and inestimable service to the com munity. During the pact year much pro gress has been noted in each of the seven churches here, the total mem bership of which comprises an over whelming majority of the citizens of this community. Christian?1854 The church originally called An tioch, but now known as the Christ ian Church of Farmville, located on the corner of Main and Church streets, was organized in 1854, con tinuing its active service ever since. The present edifice was built in 1909. Rev. C. B. Mashbum, the present pastor, was recalled four years ago to this pastorate after an absence of fifteen years. 4.1 1- /? ? ?? JL/UHU& tuts past iew montns two series of meetings have been held; the Rev. Randall Farris, being the preacher of the fall meeting, and the pastor holding the pre-Easter meet ing. Arrangements are now being made for a celebration of the eightieth an niversary of the church during the last week of this month, with Rev. Leland Cook, of Kinston, delivering the daily messages. The organizations of the church and their heads are: Sunday School, J. 0. Pollard, supt.; Woman's Coun cil, Mrs. Henrietta M. Williamson, president; Christian Endeavor, Miss Florence Lewis, leader. Emmanuel Episcopal?1888 Emmanuel Episcopal Church was organized and a frame building erect ed in 1888, the present structure be ing built in 1919-20. Rev. A. Q. Beckwith, Jr., accepted the rectorship of the Hillsboro Epis copal Church in February, and the local church has been without a lead er since that time. .T. W .Tntmo*' io J ? ... Vought is presi dent of the District Get-Together Group of Pitt County. Primitive Baptist?1900 The Farmville Primitive Baptist Church was established at the be ginning of the Twentieth Century, under the name of Damascus. The present building, contributed by R. L. Davis, was erected in 1930. Rev. J. B. Roberts, of Greenville, is pastor, and holds services here once a month. An account of the recent Associa tional Meet held here is given in these columns under the title of "Some Of The Outstanding Events Of The Current Year." Methodist Episcopal?1901 The Farmville Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in the fall of 1901, the first church, a frame build ing, being completed in 1903, and the present structure in 1925. Rev. H. L. Hendricks is serving his fourth year as pastor. The church organizations and their heads are as follows: Sunday School department, John T. Thome; Woman's Missionary Society, Mrs. J. I. Morgan; Young Woman's Missionary Society, Mrs. S. T. Lore; Children's dept., Mrs Claude Barrett; Epworth league, Mrs. H. L. Hendricks; Junior Epworth league, Mrs. J. II. Cutchins. A series of meetings was held dur ing the past year by Rev. K. J. Reese, of Washington. Missionary Baptist?1909 The Farmville Baptist Church was organized in 1909 and the dedication of its new church building was held on October 31, of that year. Rev. L. R. Ennis is pastor and di rects the activities of the church organizations, which include: the Sunday School, with Gedrge W. Davis, as supt.; the Missionary So ciety, of which Mrs. J. Sterling Gates is head; the B. Y. P. U., Mrs. J. M. Wheless, leader; and the Sunbeams, Miss Martha Turnage Rasberry, lead er. Presbyterian?1917 The present Presbyterian Church was completed in the fall of 1917, the first Presbyterian sermon being preached here in 1908, by Dr. George Belk, Evangelist for the Albemarle Presbytery. Rev. H. M. Wilson is the pastor and has conducted a series of meet ings for his local congregation dur ing the past year. Organizations of the church con sist of the Sunday School, with John Hill Paylor as superintendent; the Woman's Auxiliary, whose leader is Miss Josie Heame, with Mrs. J. M. Hobgood and Mrs. H. M. Wilson as circle chairmen. Catholic Church?1931 St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church was built in 1931, a gift from Bishop Haven, of Raleigh. Father Michael J. Begley the pas tor, resides in Wilson but holds ser vices here each Sunday. (The last issue of The Spotlight carried a complete history of each of the Farmville churches.) Ministerial Union The Farmville Ministerial Union is an organization of the Protestant ministers residing in, or near Farm ville. It was organized for the pur pose of mutual helpfulness and co operation in the common tasks and common problems that confront the Christian Churches and the Christian ministry. This organization meets monthly for the purpose of consider ing the spiritual interests of the town as a whole, and for discussing plans for meeting in a better way existing needs. Through the pastors, who are members of this organization, the several Churches are enabled to ar range their protracted services so that they do not conflict, to plan union Sunday evening services during the summer and other union services for special occasions. Thus through this organization the Church work of Farmville is unified and strengthened and Christian fellowship promoted.
