Club on Monday afternoon, Septem
ber 23 rd.
The meeting was opened by.slngr
ing the clubs "Graden Song." Mrs.
Mary Moye Patterson, chairman of
nusic, pianist, followed by a brief
easiness session led by the presi
dent Miss Bettie Joyner, at which
ime the dues were reduced to me
ents monthly. Miss Tabitha M
)eVisconti read a letter from Mi*:
L G. Cambell, District President N.
pr Federation of Women's Clubs argjl
ag all members to be present at the
istrict meeting October 10th at
wan Quarter, N. C. New members
resented by membership committee
ad welcomed were Mesdames Robbie
mith, Raymond Shearin and _W.
figgins.
| The program consisted of a poem,
"September Day" by Miss Bettie,
Joyner; reading, "What A Garden
Means," Mrs. B. Streeter Sheppard,
followed by Douglas Mattock's lovely
poem, "Who Makes A Garden" read
by Mrs. E. C. Carr.
Mrs. J. L Morgan gave a very in
structive and interesting talk on
"Native Trees, Flowers and Shrubs
for North Carolina Gardens." She
told that tree worship is as old as
civilization, that in the Bible the.
oak is king among trees; she wove
into her talk bits of history and le
gends, how the name means oath in
Hebrew, how in Austria peasants ask
pardon of trees before cutting them,
and how Hindo custom forbids the
third marriage so one marries a tree
then the fourth can take place, how
frankincense, a gift brought to Jesus,
was a product from the pine; the
beautiful legend of Mary and Jems
fleeing, how they rested tender the
pine and the baby Jesus raised his
hands and blessed the tree and today
cut a cone lengthwise and the. im
print of His baby hand willbe.fojjnd.
She told of what has happened in
China because her trees were cnt?
what has happened in our country:
because of our own country because
of our destruction of our forests.
Mrs. Morgan cited c?antei&
have holidays when their trees, and
flowers are at their best, that Wfr
have the roost beautiful of alL colors
and we take it for grated; we have
the grey green of sprmg, the strong
green of summer and the flaming
climax of autumn colors. She, futys,
"Look at effects in the woods, re
member qnd duplicate. Plant flower
| ing, dogwood, sumac, sourw?pd, etc.,
j against a green background, say,
Carolina Hemlock and Legustrim
Japonica, woodbine and bitter
sweet." She tpok the woods and
shrubs and native flowers and com
bined them into a -Garden Beautiful.
Mrs. Morgan demonstrated her. talk
with sprays of native trees, shrubs
and flowers.
Miss Mary Jerome charmingly ren
dered two selections, "Thank God
For A Garden" and "God Touched
The Rose."
The program was concluded with
the Garden Clinic a round table dis
cussion of?the needs of the garden
and* new ?flowers.
Mrs. J. 1. Morgan handed in her
resignation as she felt she could
not attend regularly. The club ap
preciating the wonderful work she
has done toward making it the out
standing department it is today, her
foresight and her unselfishness in
serving, felt they could not give her
up, so unanimously made her an
honorary member. In her own graci
ous way she accepted and told of her
love for the department
After adjournment the hostess as
sisted by Miss Jerome served a de
licious ice course.
