Bern, by way of Ayden, Vanceboro;
making a short stop at Robert Har
sis' home, foar miles east of Ayden.
Arriving at New Bern about five
o'clock we took a ride over the city,
noting the many interesting and his
torical things along the fafer front
on the Neose river, and reading pla
cards which mark events , of long ago.
Stopped by the Post Office and Unit
ed State's Court Building which rank 1
along the class A. and afterwards
wended our way back to R. P. Al

? Sunday, July 8; After persuing the
morning papers, some of the family
attended the Methodist church. Next
but not least we assembled around a : I

At three o'clock we started for
another sightseeing trip; our first
stop was the National Cemetery,
which is bedecked with white markers '
designating widowleas pits where the
heroes are Blumbering in Nature's |
sweet repose, where Old Glory on- .
furls its starry>? striped folds. Next, j
| crossing the Trent river for a few
miles we cast oar eyes at the old '
breast works of Fort Totem, where 1
I the British cannon roared in 1770. 1
Then we visited the estate of Gov- !
ernor Speight, the first Colonial Gov- j
ernor of North Carolina.
Retracing our route, we made a _
Northern tour of the North side of
the Trent, driging through the wind- (
ing pathways amid the moss covered ,
trees and the vine draped under- j
brush, perfumed by the wild rose, j
jessamine and honeysuckle, where the ,
honey bee gathers his elixir. j
Then we came to the silver stream
of Fishing Creek, which is the West- ]
ern boundary of Senator Simmons' ]
estate, lately submitted to the Board j
of Engineers as a suitable site for
the Veteran Home and Hospital, and j
which, personally, I consider to be j
One of the best and most fitting loca- (
tions for Veterans to either live or (

We arrived at home in the cool of r
the evening, being accompanied by F. 4
