Sunday To Be
Mother's Day
? ^
LET US THANK GOD
You may be the meanest man in
your neighborhood. You may have
no regard for the laws of God or
man. Or you may be the most godly
?the most upright man in your
community.
In either case, there is one person
who loves you just as though you
were one of the saints. She folkms
everything you do with a loving
heart. She will toot your horn even
when no one else will. And you love
her?if you have not sunk so low as
to have lost every spark of tender,
human feeling.
This person is your mother. "All
that I am, all that I expect to be, I
owe to my mother." These words
were spoken many years ago by a
kindly man who will go down among
tho immortas bv the name of Abra
ham Lincoln. Not only were these
words true in the case of Lincoln.
They were true in your case and
mine.
Sunday is Mother's Day. Why
shouldn't we go to church on that
day and take our mother with us and
thank God that she has been spared
to be with us ? And if we must wear (
the white rose on Mother's Day, why
shall we not go to church and thank
God for the memory of the person
to whom owe we everything?
Above all, let us thank God from
the bottom of our very souls that we
are able to be with our mother on j
that day and breathe the untainted
air of a free land. Let us remember
the fallen young men in Europe who
will not see their mother this Moth
er's Day.
Would Export
Surplus Cora
Subsidy Program Put
Into Effect By Depart
ment
Washington, May 9?The Agricul
ture Department announced today
the inauguration of an export sub
sidy program for corn designed to
reduce record surpluses.
! The department asked export
grain traders to submit offers under
which grain would be shipped to
Canadian and European markets.
Officials indicated deals were now
f under consideration involving the
I caio nf between 20 and 30 million
bushels.
The corn probably will be taken
from stocks the government would
sell the corn to exporters at prices
which would enable them to meet
competitive prices in foreign mar
kets.
Officials said there was no indi
cation yet as to how much grain it
would sell under the subsidy pro
gram.
Chicago, May 9.?Extension of the
government's grain export subsidy
program to include corn, of which
the United States has the largest
surplus on record, produced a rally
j in corn prices here today that es
tablished new highs for almost three
' yen "3.

Nan-Belligerency Attitude of Italy Is
Emphasized By Its Continued Silence
?
Premier Mussolini Tells
Followers That "Only
Facts" Will Break His
Silence On European
Situation, Thus Indica

While At Least
Rome, May 9.?Premier Musso
lini today told his Fascist followers,
celebrating army and empire day,
that "only facts" would break his
self-imposed silence on the European
war. *
?
II Duce thus indicated clearly that
Italy's non-belligerency remained
without change until some new de
velopment in Europe's conflict plung
ed the country into war.
Mussolini referred to the declara
tion of the Italian empire four years
ago.
"A great aay in tne ilibcu* ^ vj,
country was that of May 9, 1936."
Mussolini said. "It was a day of
sunny victory.
"After my speechs you must be
come accustomed also to my silence.
Only facts will break it.1*
While Mussolini was addressing
his followers, Fascist authorities in
dicated that Italy still is on the
fence, waiting the right moment to
jump in and get what she wants in
prestige and more living space.
Associates of Mussolini emphasiz
ed that Italian preparedness for war
did not mean necessarily that Italy
was entering the conflict soon.
"Our army is under arms, but no
body can or must draw arbitrary or
dangerous deceptions from this atti
tude," said a newspaper. "Our
arms are always ready to be should
ered at any moment interests of the
country require."

following this, it is alleged that the |
