Se a Hm per week Hail Matter at tba at FannvOla, N. C, unaet of March 3rd, 1878. - THANKS Taken as a matter of course so often, and perhaps deserving the little recognition received for services rendered, the representatives of the press especially appreciate the following letter: The Editors of the Farmville Enterprise, Farmville, N. C. This is to express oar thanks to yon and yours for the very pleasant stay in your City last Tuesday eve, ning—The Chiefs sod Firemens meeting—we fed that we got a lot out of our stay. U you are ever in our City dont fail to drop in to see us. We have two swell equipped Fire Stations. Thanking you again for your good old hospitality and what we got out of your meeting; and wishing you and yours a very happy New Year, The Ricky Mount Fire Department. Our reply; The Rocky Mount Fire Department, Rocky Mount, N. C. Thanks a million for your department's note of appreciation of what little service the press was able to render the Firemen's meet of last week. We always attend and enjoy the firemen's meetings on account of the enthusiasm, genuine good fellowship and cordiality that prevail. We rejoice that the firemen have at last been given the recognition they so richly deserve, and feet we can count on you to measure up to the "whale of a job," as Sherwood Brockwell expressed it, in the first line of National and Home Defense, which had been delegated to you. We shall certainly accept your invitation to look in at the well equipped Rocky Mount Fire Stations when we are in your city again. Sincerely, The Editors. THE BILL RUNS HIGH The projected expenditure of $66,000,000,000 for the cost of warfare daring the fiscal year which begins July 1st breaks down into $427.48 for every man, woman and child in the country, according to figures compiled by the United Press. This will give the residents of Pitt County an idea of what it costs this country to permit aggressors to pursue their course unchecked in Europe, Asia and Africa. The bill for isolation runs high. WORSE THAN WAR There is much truth in the assertion of Dr. Charles E. Diehl, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, United States, who says that men who once thought there was nothing worse than war "have come to realize that Hitlerism is worse* . gjf The statement embraces the attitude of a great many religious leaders in the United States. Thousands of these good men, after the first World War determined to devote themselves to the promotion of, peace and applied themselves energetically to the denunciation of war WALSTONBURG NEWS to create limitations upon the individual's right to think and express his thoughts, topic considered. Any — curb intellectual freedom in an attempt to perpetuate the present status is an obstacle to pmgfess and freedom. Even in educational circles, sometimes, the course of inquiry and conclusion is restricted, usually to placate financial, economic or religious groups whose patronage the intelligence-dictators would either have continue or begin. The future welfare of humanity is sacrificed for such current favors. Tolerance of discussion, based upon sincerity of belief, is the foundation alike of both democratic government and the maintenance of human liberty. Without freedom for criticism of both doctrines and deeds, no error can be corrected, and no improvement may be looked for when human beings have been totally subjected to mental control and censorship. A particularly disagreeable fact in every case where some distatorship decrees beliefs and opinions for everybody is the savagery with which opposition is attacked and physically obliterated.
