HOLD JOINT MEETING
An inspirational meeting was held
by the women of the Pnsbyterian,
Christian, Episcopal, and Methodist
churches in the Christian Church on
Thursday afternoon of last week, in
cooperation with the World's Council
of United Chvrehes which designated'that
day for meditation on the
subjects, "Home and Church" and
"Christian Education.4'
Mrs. B. O. Turn age was the leader
for the sendee and Mrt. W. P. Easley,
Mrs. Zeb Whitehurst, Mrs. C. B.
Mashburn, Sr., and and Miss Esteile
McBride 'brought splendid messages
on the subject themes. Special music
was presented by the Junior Choir
of the Methodist Church with Miss
Elisabeth Long at the piano.

- The Rebecca Winbourne Chapter,
U. D. C., met on Friday afternoon
with Mrs. Robert Rouse as gradous
hostess*and Mrs. C. E. Moore, president,
presiding.
The Flag Salutes were lead by Mrs.
J. W. Parker. A most interesting
program was given by Mrs. Rouse
who spoke on Southern Women, during
the War Between the States, and
by Mrs. T. W. Lang who gave a
paper on Chief Justice John Marshall
and Andrew Jackson.
Artistic arrangements of red and
white gladioli, an} dutch iris in
shades it blue deoorated the horn#
and the hostess served a congealed
salad sparse with Sandwiches, ham
biscuits aha iced tea. Pansies graced
the refreshment plates.

Charleston, S. C., May 13. — Two
North Carolinians recently were
graduated here with a class of Naval
officers and rata selected for special
training in detecting and destroying
enemy submarines.
They are: Ensign Thomas Eli Joyner,
Jr., of 802 N. Main Street, Ftomjfelle,
and J. K. Wilson, Jr., Soundman
third class, of High Point.
The anti-submarine training is a
part of the Navy's comprehensive
preparedness program in which regular
duties are supplemented by
brief but intensive courses in various
phases of Natal warfare. ■%£
