HE LEFT THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN Along with others whose birthdays we honor in the historic ni patriotic month of February, we pay tribute to a man who gave as many "Modem Conveniences." We are all grateful to Thomas A. Edison for his industry, perseverance and achievement in new worlds. He worked tirelessly, lived simply, and was most vitally interested in making tile world a better place for those who would follow him to live in. He accomplished that purpose. Pay-triots hinder while patriots win the war. <■ The pi see for kickers is in the pen with the mules. The cows tre not beefing. It's the folks vdio are. Many former commonplace commodities have become oddities. Some people have no reason. Perhaps there is a reason for it. Two heads are better than one unless both of them want to run the works. One PT boat requires about 28,000 board feet of lumber. We're building hundreds of these craft If Jacob had been under rationing regulations he likely would not' have traded his savory dish of pottage for an intangible birthright The crating for one 40 mm antiaircraft gun requires about 875 board feet * of lumber. We're shipping thousands at these guns. • — i It requires an average of 300,000 board feet of lumber to block and cleat and make secure the cargo of every freighter leaving our porta. BIRD CLUB Zeb Whitehurst read an article from "The Chat," State Bird Club Magazine, on "the Homes tot the Right Birds," written hy G. fc Shepherd and Phillips Rnaaell. It ia very euy for ua to meet the needs for home* lor birds with small expenditures of time and week. Certain principles of design, construction and location should be observed to make the offered shelters safer and perhaps mora comfortable for the occupants. A well built bird house should be rainproof, durable, vertilated and readily accessible for cleaning. Neatness and rustic beauty may not only serve their utilitarian purpose but lend an attractive touch to the yard. Wood is the beat matertal and pine, syprees and poplar are easily workable. Reogh slabs from Ae saw mill are excellent and cheap. State Gcfltee Hints For Farm Homemakers By Roth Current, N. C. State College. Last year Americana wasted more than 380 million pounds of cabbage by throwing, away the tore and outer leaves! At lent one-half of this waste was of edible food. How about checking up on your habits in this respect? Cabbage isnt the only victim. Many green, vitamin-filled leaves are thrown away because they're ragged or broken. Outer leaves that dont look too presentable are still useful for a chopped salad, or for soup. Leather experts have thene tips to offer on the winter, care iof shoes. Keep shoes clean, dry, oiled, away from heat, and in good repair. Two enemies of leather are moisture and heat. If your shoes get wet in the ■now or rain, dry them slowly and away from heat stronger than your hand can bear, as wet leather scorches readily. Stuff the shoes with crumpled paper to keep them in shape, and rub castol oil into the leather while it is wet After the shoes are dry, polish them. A person is mote efficient when he eats breakfast than when he doesn't The difference comes in the morning hours. Studies have shown that children who eat proper breakfasts have a better chance to do well in school than the ohildien who d9 not eat a good breakfast. When you are planning breakfast, it is well to remember what the word "breakfast" means. Often it is 12 to 14 hours from supper to breakfast; so you are literally "breaking a fast" You refuel the body at breakfast time, for the day's work. IMERICAN HEROES BAPTIST CHURCH Rn. Unri C.
