ACmrPPIBS OF CLUB WORK
(By Mrs. H. D, Moye)
"When We're Ore*'We" Grow" is
the title of a book receatly written
by Dr. Jen* S. MrKimmnn, telling
the story of Home De
work in North Carolina.
just what home J1
work has dona and is
do, in. Pitt County, and our:
Farmville Community.
The fundamental aim in home club
work is the development of the rural
family in attain trig a higher plane of
profit, comfort, culture, influence, and
power through a continuing program
of Education. Nothing haa contribut
ed more to better homes and better
life in rural areas than organised
home demonstration club work.
Our community 1s organised into
three clubs, namely?Ballards, Seven
Pines and Farmville. Through the
sponsorship of the State College Ex
tension service the women of these
communities gain practical home
making information in all of its
phases, which make for successful
farm and home makers.
Seven Pines Qab
The Seven Pines club is one of our
newer clubs in Pitt County, and the
latest organised in our community.
This group was organised in March
1946 with 14 members. Now four
teen months later it has twenty-six
members. It has grown, hasnt it? I
The first officers of the new club
were: Mrs. Ichabod Allen, president;
Mrs. Johnnie Rouse, vice-president;
and Mrs. Bert little, secretary and
treasurer. At the close of one year
of. service they relinquished their
offices to Mrp. Joe Jones, Mrs, Bert
little, and Mrs. Clifton Ellis, respec
tively.
This club is really doing a Splendid
job in helping to develop leadership,
family life and inspire rural people
to make every effort to improve
their cultural, financial, spiritual and
physical surrondings. In the words
of Mrs. Clifton Ellis, "Home Demon
stration work helps to improve to-1
day's home so that tomorrow's world
will be stronger and healthier."
' Ballsrds Club
The Ballards Club was organised
twelve years ago under the leader
ship of Mrs. Josie McArthur, Mrs.
Annie Flanagan, and Mrs. Roberta
Tyson; with Miss Ethel Nice, the
County Home Agent as an able spon
sor. This club was fortunate in hav
ing a community "building for its use,
the old Ballards school house.
The club has grown with the addi
tion of the women of the Langs' Com
munity and the active membership
now is about twenty-five women.
There is no way to measure the grow
th in improvement of each individual
and her family, through putting into
practice the methods learned in the
varied demonstrations, presented to
and by this group in these past
[twelve years. > ,
| Under the able leadership of Mrs.
J. R. Gowans, president; Mrs. H. D.
Moye, vice president; and Mrs. C. L.
I Jones, secretary and treasurer; this
club is going to continue .its growth
and give each member something to
live for as well as live with.
Farmville Club 1 I
Mrs. J. R. Lewis was chosen to lead
the little group of nine women, who
with Miss Ethel Nice's aid organized
Farmville Home Demonstration club
in 1932. The organizing group was
composed at the following members:
Mrs. A. C. Carraway, Mrs. Lula
Forbes, Mrs. Maggie Htnson, Mrs.
Ben Carraway, Mrs. Mattie Ti?weU,
Mrs. Johnny Tugwell, Mrs. J. H.
Heath, and Mrs. Bettie Lewis.
This group grew slowly but steadi
ly reaping Educational, Spiritual and
social benefits. A very real growth
[in membership was realised when
[Farmville No. 2, a more recently
organized club, joined with them,
Farmville No. 1, ta form the now ex
isting Farmville Home Demonstra
tion dub. *"
It was indeed a happy Christmas
party for this club; held in their new
ly erected club house in December
1938. I am sure that their Christmas
songs that year held an extra note of
cheer for their husbands, who had
donated logs, labor and other neces
sities to make possible this fine club
house.
The club house was built on a love
ly wooded plot of ground donated by
Mr. J. H. Harris and Mr. A. C. Monk, i
This building is indeed an inspiration
for the many other clubs in the Coqa
ty, who have aspirations of some day
having a club house for the use of
their community. We cannot have
too many , of these buildh^s to help
maintain the position once held by the
county school and the country church,
that of bringing the rural community
together with a common purpose, on
a common meeting ground, be it a
social or a club demonstration.
The Farmville dub.is advancing
?gram this year under the
of Mrs. Claude Joyner,
Mrs. J. R. Lewis, vice
it; and Mrs. B. M. Lewis,
VERONA LEE JOYNEB ? Pitt
County's Horn*
Agent for the paatflve
Mrs. C. V. Nichols; end treasurer,
Mrs. W. L. White.
These ladies have a very active
proup. They hold their meetings in
the school Horns Economics cottage,
md their socials of Family meetings
in the Agriculture Building.
Oar Home Agent
Miss Verona Lee Joyner, one of our
own Farmville girls became our Horns
Agent in* April 1941. It is through
her very efficient planning and lead
ship that. Hie program has made such
wonderful progress during the diffi
cult war years, Just passed. Farm
ville should truly be proud of Verona
Lee and the .recognition she has
brought Pitt County through her well
planned and executed Demonstration
Program.
Progress
In the words of Mrs. Herman
Baker, a member of the Farmville
club and a Past President of the Pitt
County Council' of Home Demonstra
tion Clubs:? ,
"The Progress of our work has been
great
Bigger and better results, later, you
just wait.
We've learned to code, wash, sew,
beautify and can;
To build homes, rear families accord
ing to plan.
In this great outdoors of God's you
see,
We've learned to do, to see, and to be.
May the Home Demonstration work
in our community grow
So that Happiness will reign, instead
of sorrow and woe."
