Johnson, State trea surer, who has made no bones about the fact that he was going to run for governor in. 1948, officially an nounced his candidacy yesterday and pried the lid off a race which is ex pected to find several other outstand ing North Carolinians competing for the Democratic nomination. Olla Bay Boyd of Pinetown has already announced. Others expected to join Johnson and Boyd as major contenders are R. Mayne Albright, Wilkins P. Horton and W. B. Ballen tine. who now serves as lieutenant fmM governor.- . Mr. Johnson's statement announc ing his candidacy follows: "This is an announcement of my candidacy for Governor of North Carolina subject to the Democratic Primary of 1948. It is intended only as a statement of my candidacy. In the months ahead, I shall give full information as to my aims and policies. "As State Treasurer, as Director of Local Government, and as a mem ber of many of the most important State Boards and Commissions, I have had an opportunity to learn the workings of the State Govern ment and to know the problems and needs of the people of North Caro lina. I believe that my experience and training in the business of government, on both the state and local jfovernment levels, will be of value~in the years just ahead. "If elected, I will be free to as sume the office of Governor with only one commitment?a promise to do what I believe to be best for all the pebple of the State. "While I will not go into detail as to my prbgram at this time, I do wish to make one simple state ment which I hope to make the key note of the service I desire to rend er.
