VJTAL INITIATIVE
Port Morgan (Colorado) Times
In these times of agitation t
tween groups on industrial matters
it can be said that renewed stimula
tion of that spirit of initiative and
self-reliance?both individual - and
corporate?is vital to America to
morrow on two counts: Pint, tie
cause popular self-government itself
cannot long exist without an econo
mically independent country; second,
because the rising standard of living
that we seek to attain depends on
increased production, and we cannot
get increased "production in the ab
sence of individual and corporate in
itiative and efficiency, backed up fay
the united effort of all our economic
groups. .
In respect to the first point, name
ly, the vital importance of maintain
ing an economically independent citi
zenry: Obviously, the preservation of
a representative democracy hinges
directly mi the willingness of the
people to decide public questions on
the basis of the general national wel
fare?not on narrow considerations
of individual or group selfishness.
If citizens are not themselves eco
nomically independent but are the
wards of the state, how can they a
void dealing with public questions on
the basis of self-interest. Further
more, without a financially independ-1
ent citizenry, how can we hope to
maintain onr two-party political sys
tem ? The party in power is in posi
tion to use public funds for political
propaganda. Financial support for
the opposition can come only from
private citizens, and without intelli
gent opposition our republican sys
tem of government is self-defeating.
Obviously, also, private business
cannot exist without constant accre
tions of new capital. If private citi
zens are not in position to furnish it,
the state must supply it and when
government becomes the ^ primary
source of capital funds, national so
cialism automatically displaces rep
resentative democracy. The church
and our private educational and phi
lanthropic institutions would be lost
without the support that individual
citizens can furnish them.
Thus, a self-reliant, economically

Taft was elected preakhnt of the
organisation by acclamation Satur
day afternoon at the next to final
session of the 12th annual three-day
convention. There were no other nom
inations for the office, in spite of
pro-convention rumors that several
others were actively seeking the
post Taft succeeds Basil L. White
nor of Gastonia, who served during
the past year.
Other officers named, all by unani
mous votes, were: Ida Pear! Petree
of Greensboro, vice-president; H.
Clifton Blue of Aberdeen, secretary;
David Royster of Cleveland county,
treasurer; George Fountain of Tar
bo ro, national committeeman, and
Flora Nixon Powell of Charlotte, na
tional committeewoman.
Occupying the spotlight at the con
vention was Governor JamW?E. Fol
sora, a 6 foot. 8 inch, 38-year-old
giant of a man, whose homely man
ner of speaking captivated his large
audience assembled at a banquet in
the ballroom of the Sir Walter Hotel
for the final session.
DeclanKg that present day youth

proof of his belief in young people is
the fact that the ages of members of

Disapproval of the transfer of
large sums of money to various for
eign governments was voiced by
Folsom, who declared that we cannot
[huy the loyalty of Europe and the
rest of the world.
A contrary viewpoint was present
ed to the convention by Senator
Clyde R. Hoey. The former govern
or declared that this government had
entailed expenditures of 385 billions
of dollars to win the recent war, and
said "we should not refuse to spend
a few more billions to maintain the
peace, and justify the expenditure of
those large huge sums in prosecuting
the war."
The-Senator said that the cost of
World War II to all participants had
been the astronomical sum of one
trillion dollars.
"This inconceivable sum," he de
clared, "would build a five-room
bouse for every family in the world."
Declaring that he would like to see
Senator Robert A. Taft nominated
for the presidency by the Republican
party, Senator Hoey said his reasons
for this preference were that Taft
would be the easiest candidate to de
feat,'but that, if elected, he would
make the best Republican president
we could have.
Senator Hoey also said that, in his
opinion, Taft "always knows where
he stands, and has more courage than
all the other Republican candidates
put together."
