THEY CALL IT “PROGRESSIVE’'
(Christian Science Monitor)
Henry Wallace and his followers
had a successful convention — from
their standpoint. They got much
publicity, they generated great en
thusiasm, and they skated over a.
split between their Communists and
non-Communists.
On-the-spot observers have been
most impressed by the energy and
enthusiasm of the Wafiaceites. Youth
has been enlisted in marked degree.
The new party, which has now for
mally taken the name, Progressive,
also has a strong attraction for many
who are usually described by another
fine word—idealists. The consider
able number of Americans who be
lieve war can be avoided by making
concessions to Russia make a majori
ty of this group. In addition are Hie
convinced radicals, certain labor
groups and others who feel “put up
on.” Not to be omitted are the Com
munists, few perhaps in numbers but
large in influence.
Its most immediate practical pur
pose is to subtract votes from liber
al Republicans or Democrats running,
for office. This is expected to be
most noticeable in contests for Con
gress and sage political observers are
predicting the Waliaceites will suc
ceed in making the next Congress the
most reactionary in recent history.
Another danger is the possible ef
fect in the field of foreign policy.
The “Wallace or War” slogan is reck
lessly misleading—particularly when
no one expects it to be Wallace. We
trust that only a limited number of
Wallace banner. That is one of the
wont things about the new party—
it makes these people hostages of
Communism. It draws aside into a
backwash large numbers of voters
who could bring into the other parties
needed fresh currents of liberal
thinking and humanitarian purpose.
