BIRD CLUB NOTES -y. f s-: Tto boys, including BdSby Harper, Alex Allen, Autry Vandiford and Sam Kittreli, Jr., all new mem bers of tWs Bhd ch*, enjoyed a pic nic lunch in the grove at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Currie in Sraane county Saturday morning. Jesse BMdiey read a general de scription of the cardinal, the state bird. The male is a brillant red *ith the front portion of forehead, front part of cheek region, chin and throat being black and forming a conspicu ous cap entirely surrounding the bill. The female is a duller red; giving the appearance of. being veiled. Her color iB less vivid to protect her from enemies while on the nest Both hg*e conspicuous cresttjd heads. The bird typifies everything that is elegant and chivalric and is a fine specimen- of bird character; Ever cheerful, active and industrious, the eagerly carts fbr the young while the female is sitting on a sec ond laying of eggs. Nothing^ daunts him in the care of the young._ BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT 1 Vht. and Mrt. W; A. Pollard, Jr., announce the birth of■•■a daughter, - Stuaan Palmer, January 28, in Memo rial General hospital, Kinston. Mrs. Pollard is the former Miss Geneva Palmer McCacherft of Linwood. BIRD CLUB The members of the Bird Club stu died the bob-white at the. meeting on Saturday and Gordon Lee was -the reader. The call of the bob-white is one of the cheeriest sounds in nature. Nearby, it commands attention; afar, it harmonizes with other sounds of summer, yet never palls up on the ear. It names the bird. Northerners call him quail; Southerners, part ridge; but he has named himself and ornithologists have derided that he is the prior authority. His cry ,is - pleasing, heartening, delightful. Far mers translate it as more wet, saying that it foretells rain. Perhaps there i» no other wild bird to which the American people are - more indebted. He delights in the faun; is the friends and companion of man; a destroyer of weeds ahd perni cious insects. From the standpoint of the greatest good to the greatest number, he is supreme. The male is very attentive to his mate, he is a good provider, and has been known to assume the entire charge of the brood upon the death of the female, brooding, feeding, and protecting them at aU times like the fondest mother. It thrives on the Southern cow peas and many other foods which are plentiful It is quite as important to see that'the foods the birds require at different seasons of the year are plentiful, and that they have proper coven and protection, as it is to see their enemies are controlled. Briars, both berry and flower, the blackberry and the wild rose, .make safe and attractive covers and they also furnish much food. The young quails live largely on insects' found in the fields and woods.. In winter many birds will perish unless food is. supplied. A little com, served with grit, at established feeding places will save hundreds of birds during a se vere winter. Jesse and Edward Bradley were welcomed as new members. Cake and crackers were served. NOTICE TO CREDITORS . Having qualified as Administratrix, C. T. A., of the estate of Troy L.
