Shiny new Florence-Mayo cur ers are shown above being loaded on a truck at the company’s new Farmville plant and then to dealers throughout the flue-cured tobaceo area. Athough some of the Mayo curers are in use in foreign countries, Presi-1 dent R. E. Mayo, inventor of the “air-conditioned curer,” says that his ! company is now concentrating on do-: mestic marketing and is not now, manufacturing any for export. Mayo curers have been used suc-j cessfully in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Kingston, Jamaica. The firm also made one shipment to Argentina. Most recent foreign shipment was made during the war-^-a shipment of several sets to the Brown-Williamson Tobacco company in Venezuela. The flue-cured belt offers an at tractive Held for manufacturers of j oil burning curers. Of the 400,000 barns now in use in the belt, only 100,000 of them are equipped with the modem devices. When and if the belt is completely supplied, the mar-1 ket Will be about like <$e automobile business, Mayo explains. I Mayo admits that his burners last too long to moke much of a replace ment trade. “With proper care, our burners are good for about 15 years,” he says. He added that the firm was just beginning' to sell replacements for some of the sets sold when the company was first established in | Maury 13 years ago.
