Girl Scouts throughout the natioi
are celebrating this week as N&ttan
ai Girl Scout week, honoring thi
fonuding of the organization in Sa
vannah, Ga., 38 years ago by Julietb
Low. Visitors to Savannah head
quarters are impressed by the variei
objects turned out by this calentei
woman. At her death in 1927, shi
gave the carriage house to Savannal
Scouts for a meeting place. One roori
has been set aside as a museum. Oa
display are hand-painted plates
sculpture, a commemorative flag, at
well as pictures, souvenirs and let
ters, and other things which Mrs
Low’s hands made. Gordstonian Park
a campsite given by the Union Bag
and Paper company, has wrought Jroi
gates, which Mrs. Low made one sum
mer in England. The park is name<
for'her family.
The receptionist told the following
story about Mrs. Low, who frequently
visited England and other European
countries. While out walking oni
day she came to a stream over whicl
was a log. Afraid to cross, she no
ticed an old man nearby. She toll
him that she wanted him to go acrosi
the log and she would follow, bat the
man did not' wish to. After much in
sistence, he did. When • they were
safely across, rite discovered that he
was blind. Mrs. Low was deaf.
Birthdays come every year, regard
lees of how old or young you would
like to stay, ft is the custom in the
family of one kraal woman for nobody
to put more than 16 candles on her
cake, whether it be grandmother or
daughter. A Kentucky reader’s three
year-old grandson furnished plenty oi
laughter by decorating grandmoth
er's take. On it he placed 78 .can
dles, 72 of which he lighted, and
grandmother is to her early fifties.

Without more boys, the Farmville
High School Mixed chorus, even its
most optimistic supporters know, will
not be able to bring back s superior
rating from district music festivals,
such as the .one in Greenville today.
The present chorus has only 17 boys
as compared to 38 girls. Only four
are tenors, making it necessary foi
several girls to sing an octave lowei
to boost tenor strength. Now is tot
time for .parents to seek to interest
their .sons in joining next year’s
chorus. The chorus meets two 50
minutes periods a week and a hall
unit is given for the year’s work.
Miss Alma Whitley, who has dons
an excellent job as director for the
past two years, could use at least
15 tenors and 20 basses.
A. girls trio, composed of Misset
Wills Rae Harper, Pat Corbett and
Ruthe Tyon, has received numerous
compliments on their a capella ren
dition of “Bless Ye the Lord/’ in sev
eral churches recently. Sunday toes
sang at the Methodist church. AU art
voice students of Mrs. Bernice Turn
age.
