and the displaying in 83 languages
of a poster carrying a symbolic globe
and the legend, ‘ United Nations Day,
October 24.” v
For that d:iy, Wednesday, mark
ed the sixth anniversary of the
date in 1945 when the United Nations,
Charter became effective as an in
strument of international coopera
tion.
The UN, to judge by certain at
tacks on it, still is somewhat short of
having convinced all Americans that
it is a wholly useful tribunal or
offers a trustworthy alternative to
the assertion of national self
sufficiency. Yet a quiet survey of
its activities over the past six years
provides a great deal of food for
' reflection as to whether its bene
ficial results could have been obtain
ed by any other available tneans.
Here, for instance, are some of the
items in the record: Withdrawal of
Russian troops from Iran and of
British and French troops front Syria
and Lebanon in 1946. Establish
ment of a Balkan committee which
by its reoorte contributed to the de
fense of Greece in 1947 and after.

This, of course, Is an incomplete
catalog of UN functions. But, con
templating them, one must feel that
if the UN were not in Operation
something of enormous magnitude,
would have to be built to take its
place. Yet the whole structure rests
very heavily for its permanence and
success on the active, understanding
support of individual citizens in Its
60 number countries. The American
Association for the UN phrases it,
“The world’s best hope for peace is
UN phis you.”

We've traveled# long, long way to
gether, my friends.
Many are the years illumined with
_gokfen deeds, and splendid trends.
Trends up the ascendant way, toward
great Directions.
How matchless the memories ihter
mingled with Today’s Reflections!
Indeed, we are awed completely by
the wondrous beauty,
The challenging courage, triumphant

Duty/
The path hasn’t always been easy, to
be sure,
Yet we had faith to go on, the spirit
to endure.
Sometimes there were those uftpljlfll
it couldn’t be done,
But we kept on-striving and smiling,
and always won. V
Now there’s an inner ecstasy, a in
surgent joy, we know,
And find all about us the shining
quality of a miraculous glow.

Not a home-cooked meal nor a nice

We should all pray to God several
times a day, '
For our boys lo come home from far.
