The 'following "'gentlemen of Jones
county were in the city on Saturday, to
confer with Mr. W. J. Best, President of
the Midland N. C. Railroad, in regard to
building a road from Core Creek, via
Trenton, to Hew river, in Onslow
county: ". . " '
Thos. J. Whitaker, J. L. Kinsey, P.
M. Pearsall, Benj. Askew,' John W.
Wooten, E. B.! Ialer, W. J. Basberry and
E. R. Page. '
The conference was held at the office
of the Midland Railway, and Mr. Beet
submitted a proposition, in substance as
follows:
. The Midland Railway Company to
construct, iron and equip a road from
Core Creek, via Trenton, to some point
on New ' river, in Onslow county, and
operate it as the property of the Midland.
The counties of Jones and Onslow to
issue bonds to the amount of 950,000
each, to rim twenty years at 6 per cent,
interest, payable .semi-annually: said
bonds to be held in trust for the Midland
until said road is completed, and to be
paid to the Midland Company when the
first passenger and freight train passes
over the road; the two counties to re
ceive stock in said road to the amount of
said bonds. '
The committee had the proposition put
in writing, and will lay it before the
meeting to be held at Trenton during
Court week.

1Lessks. Editors : An ancient
proverb hath it
"There Xmany a slip
Twixt the cup and the lip."
T say ancieut proverb because my lu
foimation gathered from those pretend
ing of learning, is, that it originated in
the presence of Ancaeus,, King of Sa
moa, who lived through the Trojan war!
that it was a good couplet, afterwards
in use by the Latins subsequently trans
lated by Erncius Claras, and rendered
Erasamus in bis time, by a very ele
gant line of hexanter. This much 1
have heard ; if any one doubts the same
let him prove the contrary.
Now sir, to an application of my
proverb. I- am not apt at application in
such matters. The fact is plain that
there is no railroad running to Trenton
yet. Reader apply. T
Mr. Best has offered to do the work
of construction and equipment through
the entire county on the payment to
him of 950,000. The great agricultural
interest of the future of 'Jones county
demands a railroad, but those figures,
alas 1 Too high. Plenty of good people
about Chinquipin who can't read that
sort of writing. Mr. B. must come at
us again.
Not , many people out on Monday last;
a good sign work to do at home. The
horny handed sons of toil, as our good
office seekers calls us, are busy.. -
We are now having an abundance of
that necessary grit, lawyers. Quits a
number out on Monday, all young mn

the father of the bar.' When Capt.

but quickly repaired by that energetic

The new that Dr. Barker is going to
lector here during court . week is a
source of pleasant anticipation to many.
He will find many most interesting tub
jects of phrenological direction residing
in this county, and if onr good people
will be generous In their offerings of
crammna lor examination, toe enter
tainment will be complete. There is
one man who lives in Trenton or near,
"with the front -of Jove, an eye like
Mars, to threaten and command, To
thus is allied a generous, yea, I might
say prodigal regard for himself and
withal an imagination so indulgent to
his every wish of famous narrative that
at his bidding the curtain can rise on any
state of facts. He is a fitting subject,
marked and distinct. I wUl not men
tion his name. You know him.
In conclusion pardon a compliment
to your paper. My neighbors unite in
saying it is the best paper ever pub
lished in New Berne. This may h a
doubtful compliment, but 1 mean it to
be a true ahe.

A visit to the evening's services at the

Wesleyan unless the congregation can
be made to feel a personal application of
the sermon that it was intended for

for his neighbor and in this respect Dr,

This court convenes to-morrow for
regular busineBs. We learn thereeve on
the criminal trial docket eighty cases
all for illegal distilling, retailing,'
moving, &c. There are twenty-six cas
es in which the United States have sued
distillers upon their warehouse bonds
for their non-payment of taxes. There
are twenty warrants returned by com
missioners parties being held for court.
There are, also thirty civil suits. We
are glad to state, that while the clever
clerk. J. W. Payne, is still on crutches,
yet he is able to attend to all businesf itf
