within the recolleetioii of man lias
a more serious and widespread

prevails, o Reports from every State
tell pretty nearly the same .story:
JTo rain other I than local showers,

injury to com, potatoes," and late
summer and fall fruits.f J From f he
St. Croix on the east to Lake Cham

Canada border to Long Island

erable rain rej)orted during the past
four weeks, except in two or three
localities.' The hav cron. f harvest?

larger than usual, while wheat' and
oats did not suffer seriously.';;
In Maine, 'as in other States the
acreage of potatoes is -large. . The
report comes from ' Lewiston, how-i
ever, that the yield will- not-reach
half t he a vera ge : crop. There . is
still some hope for corn if the rain
is not to long delayed ; .The most
seriously affected interest iu Maine
is the lumber interest, lor the. water
is so loWi iu many of the rivers- that
ihe mills are stopped.
"' Nearly the whole State of. New

" c Death of Senator .
V";'V'r(AWorofJlr Sn.i '-'
Atlanta, y.Aug;10. Senator
Benjamin Hill died a few minutes
after C o'clock this - morning. For
several hours before his death it
wa - evident that the 'end was
near. ; '..,"' . '
Like a good many other promi
nent men in Georgia, he was bit
terly opposed to the secession of
that State from ' the Union, and
voted against it in the convention,
but he, with tle, others, followed
the State after seccession had been
decided npon. - He entered ioliti
cal rather than" military life iu the
ijonieaeracy Deginmug as a niem-
ber of. the Confederate . Provisional
Congress, and - was subsequen tly
one of the Senators from Georgia
while the Confederacy lasted. He
was-in prison for a short 'time at
Liifayette at the close of the Con
f&leritcy, ud then returned lo
Georgia to practise law. Although
h t once jmn ped into the largest
pract ice in Georgi a, the fascina
tions of political life were so great
tnat he consented to run for llei
resehtative - in the Eprty-fouith
Congress, and . vms elected, and
reelected v.. to theiForty-fifth, and
while a member was elected to the
Senate and resigned from the House.
His term as Senator- would have
expired next March.
"He. and Senator Brown were
rival caniddateC twenty-five years
ago" for. Governor, and were always
upon opposite 'sides fin Georgia
polities up to tlie time of the sec
cession of that State, and they were
finally brought together when
Brown was elected .to the Senate
in place of Gen. Gordon, who had
resigned.--When they rmet in the
Senate their lifelong political dif
ferences vseenred " only " to make
more strong the attachment which
Was . visible- to all. Hill never
made a speech to which .Brown
was. not an attentive listener, nor
did Brown ever speak unless Hill
was present, excepting, indeed,
when Hill was kept, away bv
sickness.
Hill was a man of large brain
and of rather quick temper. His
personal ' encounter with a fellow
Senator in the. Confederate Con
gress was one of the tragic incidents
of that body. He had, however, in
his older -years'-been able' to control
his 'temper,' and.' had .mellowed
greatly. There was no man on the
Democratic side . for whom the
Republicans-had a higher personal
regard, and While he grew day by
day seemingly more radical in his
Democracy,, and came to be re
cognized as one of the leading men
in.thevSenate of the so-called Bour
bon' faction, ye t'h is personal rela
tions with Senators on the IZepub
licany sideo were so kindly and
pleasant that his bitter invective
never,- lelV any" personal sting;
He even became pleasantly ac
quainted 1 and associated with
Mahone, a thing that at the time of
thext encounter. on the noor 01 tne
Senate in the spring of 1 881 ; would
have seemed almost r imiiosible
Hill's sudden discovery of the fatal
disease, last summer undoubtedly
gave hiui for more concern than he
ever exhibited. He took his seat
in the Senate at the beginning of
the session, as Matt Carpenter did
a year ago, knowing that he was a
doomed man. Yet he betryed no
sign of fear or apprehension. His
philosophy of ' life seemed to be
broad enough to enable him, as it
did Carpenter, not only to accept
the inevitable without repining
but also with such large r show of
cheerfulness ar to deceive r his
friends, even his familly. J.l
; His death removes one of the
most distinguished rand familliar
figures? in -Washington life.. He
was not a man who hid his talents
or his frailties under a bushel, and
h is career had a human in terest
which attached i. to but few. o$her
members of the Senate! With his
death there passes raway auotlier
and almost the last oi that , extra
ordinary roup of men which made
the conflicts iu the Forty-fifth and
Fort y-sixth Congresses' so notable.
