The exact figures are not ob tainable, but it is certain that the local cotton receipts from wagons during the past week have aggregated between 500 and 900 bales. The K. M. M. A. football team played the Camden team at the latter place last Thursday. The Camden team had gone in to win, and to this end bad secured three men from the South Car olina collage team. Bnt, ail the same, the K. M. M. A. boys held their own and neither side scored. 'Cal Carlisle, an employe of the Catawba Power Company, was shot and instantly killed Wed nesday by one of the negro wo men who hang around tnc dam. She claimed that tha shooting was accidental and the coroner's jury, not being able to secure any evidence to the contrary, return ed a verdict accordingly. A lot of about 150 bales of cot ton was sold at Hickory Grove last Wednesday, 90 bales by the Hickory Supply Company, and 50 bales by Messrs. W. C. and Jeff D. Whitesides. The entire lot was bought by Mr. J. P. White, of YorkvUe. He paid the Hickory Supply Company 7.90, and the Messrs. Whitesides 7.93*. The Enquirer baa from time to time made mention of tbc older brick buildings in the county. It is especially interested in any information pertaining to brick buildings outside of incorporated towns. The reporter learned. Wednesday, for the first time, of another brick building that has not previously been mentioned, and which is probably the oldest in the county. It is what is known as the "Old Gill build inf,” in Bullock’s Creek town ship, two miles east of Bliirs ville. This is a three story structure of ten rooms, now owned and occupied by Mr. T. A. Gwinn. Our information is that it was built by Captain James Gill, a Revolutionary pa triot, about 1810-11. The old "Wheeler carriage factory," on South Congress street, sad one of the most fa miliar old landmarks of the town, was destroyed by fire last Wed nesday afternoon. The building was vacant except for a squatter tenant, an old negro named Bob Gist, in one of the rooms. He had a stove with a Sue sticking out of the side of the bouse, ana it is supposed that the fire origi nated from this. It is pretty generally conceded by those who saw and understood tbc condi tions, that except for the water works and the file department, a good portion of the towu would have Seen destroyed. As it was, the loss was bat trifling, the burned structure being practi cally uninhabitable. Chief of Police Love lost about $40 worth of hay that he had stowed iq the building. There was no insur ance. The factory building be longed to Mrs. T. S. Bratton. The Pere Stoll. Yotfcville beOnt. 10U. Mr. Robert J. In order that New York may be kept before the country as a city entitled to soma respect as a business center, an army of 50,000 commercial travelers is kept continually on tbe road. These drummer* receive from $1,000 to $10,000 each, with all legitimate expenses paid. (Every expense of a commercial traveler is legitimate.) All of them are good fellows and most of them tell good stories. On their tours they gather up vast callec tic ns of things rich, ftmre, and met, to retail among their stay at-home friends. S'gL*9* , Chief Justice Puller, of the United States Supreme Court ad ministered a very deserved re buke the other day to John S. At the bearing of the ease in the United States Circuit Court at Richmond, last Friday, according to the report of the Baltimore Sun, Mr. Wise "from time to time lashed the Virginia leaders by name with rank sar casm and ridicule, until Chief Justice Putter interrupted him and reminded him that be was in a Court of Justice, engaged hi the consideration of grave con stitutional questions, in which snch personal allusions were ir relevant sod out Of place, and requested Mr. WM to confine himself to the argument In the caae." Mr. Wise made an apol ogy and promised to stick to bis text, but .throughout the hearing ha was as offensive as be could h*. hut all to little purpoae, as the case was disasissed by the Chief Jnstice for lack of Jurisdlc tioa.
