THE HEAL NORTH CAROLINA.
RICHMOND NEWS-LEADER, 14TH.
As everybody knows, llr. Good Citizen is a terror
when be Marts. The trouble with him is that he hss
the habit of waiting for a abode to Mart Urn and un
dertaking to undo the damage after it hss been done.
It is so here in Richmond and it is so in North Car
• olios. j
, Certain people in the town of Salisbury. N. C..
many of them rowdies and loafer, apd the very scam
of town end country, have put a deep shame and stain
on the State and cosunsuity. The resalt is that the
rtel North Caroline has asserted herself and stands be
fore tbs world shining; but the stain is there.
Good citisenship has been thoroughly aroused, and,
As is usual la sach cases, asserts and proves its power
ead mastery. The newspapers expressed the feeling
end purpose of the master element which had per*
mitted itself to be over-ridden and obacnrvd and al
most forgotten because it failed to assert itself. With
one voice they denounced the lynching of the throe
negroes end those who did it. They did not mince
st words. They spoke oat fearlessly and strongly
without Mopping to consider conaeqnencna to them
selves. The representative people ead substantial
citizens, those who really make and are North Caro
lina, lined up solidly with the newspapers. Judge
J*oog took the lead in urging prompt, stars, decisive
action. Newspapers, courts and people ere working
together to show the world what the real North Car
olina thinks and is and how aha feels. One of the
leaders of the lynching mob has been ■^vfanced to
fifteen years in the penitentiary within ten days after
his crime was coauniUed. In this we confess, with
some mortification. North Carolina ia ahead of Vir
finia. la this State we never have succeeded ia in
ducing a jury to convict lynchers eithougfc judges aad
oreendvw effects have don* their fad part toward that
e*»d. We have, however, proved the State’s par*
pom and ability to'neiotaiu her dignity and to nuke
lynching at least dangerous and to be followed by
troublesome consequence*.
We coogratnlate North CaroMaa on what has been
dooe toward punishing the Salisbury lynchers aad
vindicating the civilisation aad honor of the State.
Evidently the people are doing all they can do to
remove the stain. We earnestly hope they will con
tinue. The proaecatioas should not halt nor
wkh the conviction and peaishaqnt of one disrepute
tyemaa with a criminal record and comparatively aaia
flnential and friendless. * Soma of the more intelligent
aad respectable men who were in the mob should be
banted down and tent to wear stripes along with the
Pitiful rascal with whom they associated themselves
and under whose leadership they ranged themselves.
It will not do to pile the whole weight of sin on one
scape-goat. The sheriff who failed to offer proper re
sistance to the mob should be punished. The respoo
j sflrility for the wretchedly ridiculous aad disgraceful
i showing of the local saflitia should be placed aad who
ever la responsible should be punished.
Let the real people aad spirit of the real North Car
olina continue to assert thanmlvcs until the State shall
stead not otfly cleansed of the staff pot upon her, so ter
. as cleansing can be done now, but la her proper place ’
as one of the leaders of progressive thought aad par
pose of the Soath, one of the foremost illustrations of
real Southern civilization.
