Routine: business consumed
the larger portion of the session:
Various matters of interest to
the. carriers in general were dis
cussed, amon tbe topics being
good roads, department rules
and difficulties of various kinds
with which the carriers have to
contend continually Inability
to obtain copies of the ' depart

to iupply the demand for rules
to sarriers in every section of

It was decided that the asso

the first Mondav in September,
the former being Decoration
Day and the latter ' Labor Day,
both national holidays. The
next regular meeting will be
held in Gastonia May 30. An
effort will be made to secure
Congressman Webb for an ad

' Blackburn's Misfortune.
Foirbrother's Everything.
The papers have contained
here of late seyeral dispatches re
counting , the personal mistor
tunes of Congressman Black
burn. That be is in hard lines
financially is a matter of regret
to us. . A man who. meets re
Verses is always to be pitied,
even if he was the architect of
bis own misfortunes. Unmerci
ful disaster seemed to follow
fast and follow faster in his case,
and we regret that the enterpris-
ng correspondent 'in Washing
ton wanted to set him up only
to knock him down with the
announcement that be was finan
cially crippled .
The story is published that
Blackburn may go to Arizona.
f he does, if he goes there and
mixes with tbe boys, even as he
formerly mixed with them in
Wilkes, it will not be long until
you bear of bis going back , to
Congress. Blackburn is a good
ellow in his class, and it he gets
settled in Arizona you will hear
from him. Mark this .predio
tion." '::' , "
In North Carolina his cake is
dough. He has lost most all his
nends and he has never estab-
ished any .particular ousiness,
so he will find it hard to get on
nis leet .in ms lormer nome.
Anyway we are 1 Bory to know
that financial reverses have em
barrassed him, , and hope that
papers will not print any more
of his personal misfortunes, ,.

The good book says, "Give
to every one ibat asketh tbee,"
but that dosen't mean to give a
drunkard money to buy whiskey ;
it dosn't mean to give the ftaby
a hammer and looking glass be
cause he asks for it, and it dosn't
mean that we should give to pro
fessional beggars who travel
from town to town. The Bible
doesn't always mean what it
says, but it always means what
it means. m
Let us rally around the
standard of youth, remembering
that the future of our country
shall be what the young people
make it. Let us Show our fath
ers and mothers that the- boys
and girls of today shall be read
to stand fourth fully equipped
men and women of tomorrow.
Let us show them that the rising
generation which is following in
their footsteps is fully competent
to succeed them and shoulder
the responsibility of the farm,
the home and tbe nation.

copy of . the Argo Red Salmon
Cook Book.- It tells you thirty-
nine different wavs of preparing
salmon. Ask your grocer for it.
-Will a merchant"who is wise
ever cease to advertise. Yes
when the trees grow upside
down; when the beggar wears a
crown; when ice forms on tbe
sun; when the sparrow weighs a
ton : when gold dollars get too
cheap; when women secrets
keep; when a fish forgets to
swim ; when Satan sings a hymn ;
when girls go back on gum;
when tbe small boy hates a drum ;
when no 'politician schemes;
when mince pie makes pleasant
dreams; when it's fun to break a
tooth; when all lawyers1 tell the
truth ; when cold water makes
you drunk; when you love to
smell a skunk; when the drum
mer has no brass when these
things all come to pass; then
man that's wise will neglect to
advertise. ' . , ?
Mr. A. W. Latta thinks The
Gazette did him an injustice . in
its issue of the 15th in. which ap
peared the . following " item:
"Miss Alice Gattis; daughter; of
Mr. W. H. Gattis, who eloped
with Mr. A, W. Latta Wednes
day, returned home yesterday.
The girl was "deserted at Bel
mont and after arriving at Char
lotte was taken in charge by
friends." : Mr. Latta ' says - that
they did not elope; that he did
not know the young lady in
tended going on the same train
until he saw her in tbe coach;
that there was no preconcerted
plan or arrangement between
them whatever; that he did not
desert her at Belmont or any
where else ; that he took care of
her in the depot : at Charlotte,
remaining rwith her: until i a
friend of tbe family appeared on
the scene and took her home.
Miss Gattis also - denies that
there was any; elopement; :this
assertion on her part, of course,
exonerates Mr, Latta from the
charge of desertion. . Miss Gattis
also denies that she" was taken
in charge at Charlotte by friends.
The Gazette had no intention or
desire, '- when -: publishing ' the
report,"" to injure or falsely
represent' any one but' simply
gave the item as obtained from
reliable sources,-, deeming it a
good piece of news :r. That the
parties most vitally concerned
may have no cause to complain
of unfair treatment at the hands
of this paper we cheerfully pre
sent their statements .ast out
