A few days ago we quoted a gentleman to the enect that the operation of the new 2'4 cent flat passenger rate on the railroads would save uastonians szuo a month. Another figures that it will reach at least $400 a month. The passenger .receipts at the local depot amount to $2,000 a month and he says the savings will be at least 20 per cent on an . average This would bring the figures up to $400 or $4,800 a year quite a neat little sum ; one worth saving. Mr. A. S. Anderson, of the Union Theological Seminary, Rich mond, Va.. who came to Gastonia for the purpose of looking over the field with a view to takinsr charee of the work of the Presbyterian church in West Gastonia, preached in the Lorav school house Sunday after noon and at the First Presbyterian church Sunday evening. Mr. Ander son made a good impression upon both congregations and many are delighted with the prospects of hav ing him as the pastor of the new church. He left for Richmond yes terday afternoon. F.Davis & Son $200 for the fine horse which was killed at the crossing near the plaster factoiy several weeks ago, this being a com promise settlement. . Sereeant James Gattis arrived Friday from Fort Douglass, Utah, to spend several weeks with homefolks. Mr. Uattis has lust entered upon his third enlistment with Uncle Sam and is now on a three-months leave of absence from his regiment, the 29th U. S- Infantry, stationed at Fort Douglass, Utah. Mr. Gattis has seen service in the Philippines and many Western States. After the recent seismic disturbances at San Francis co he was on duty there. Death at Bessemer. ,i T-uonoenc ot the tlaett Bessemer City, March 11 Mrs. Rosa C. Bell, wife of Mr. Frelow Bell, died last Thursday, the 7th, in the sixty-fifth year of her age. She was a daughter of Alexander Hopper and Julia Ann Hopper and was born July 23, 1842, near Ellis' Ferry, Cleveland county. She died at the home ot ber daughter, Mrs. Julia E. Jones She is survived by ner nut.Danu and two children, Mrs. Julia E Jones and John R. Bell; one brother, Mr. John W. Hopper, of Shelby; and six sisters, Mrs. Sallie Hambrick. Susan bmitti, Adline Hill, Bettie Smith, Callie Anthony and Cynthia Hopper. Deceased was a memoer ot tue Southern Methodist church, hav ing joined that denomination at the early age ot 11 years, ine funeral was held at the home of Mr. J. P. Jones Fridav afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. W. V. Honeycut, and inter ment was made in the Bessemer Cemetery. New Horses and Carriages, In order to take care of its rapidly increasing business the Gastonia Livery Company is enlarging its equipment by in creasing the number of its horses and vehicles. Saturday ten new single buggies, rubber tired and all brand new, and five carriages were intalled. The company also purchased from Craig & Wilson two pairs of fine horses which are added to the already large number of good animals in the stables. OPERA HOUSE Thursday Night March 14 The Davidson College Glee Club and Orchestra New Law Firm. Messrs, A. 0. Jones and P. W. Garland, of Virginia, are the members of a new law firm for Gastonia. The former is a brother of Mr. D. M. Jones, the cotton broker, and is from Ab ingdon, Va. These young men arrived Saturday from Char lottesville, Va., where they have completed the law course in the University of Virginia. Recent they have been engaged, under the direction of the law faculty of the university, in doing some special work. Gastonia wel comes these additions to ber cir cle of legal lights.
