PICTU2ESQUE HIGH SHOALS. fbeir An Excellent Mill VUlaft on the V Sooth Fork of the Catawba in Northern Oaston Where Abide ' y Contented and Industrious Op-eratives-The Mill and Ita Equipment -The Owners and Manager. - Situated in Gaston . county, ' about half way between Lincoln . ton and Dallas on the Carolina & North-Western Railway, is the village of High Shoals. Taking its name from the shoals on the South Fork of the Ca : tawba, on the banks of which the village and the plant of the High Shoals Company is located, ' it embraces one of the. most beautiful and. ideal locations to be found in this section. The High Shoals Mill has been in . operation about seven years and was among the many plants along the river that caused the C. & N.-W. Railway to change - its road-bed between the river , and Lincolnton.fi The High . .. Shoals Company operates 11, 000 spindles and 470 looms, and will install 5,000 additional spin- V dies in the i nearfuture. The main building; is 360 by 77 feet, ', is four stories at the front end and three in the rear. The ma chinery is of the Mason make with the exception of the pick. ers which "are of the Atherton type and the speeders and slub- . bers which were turned out by the Saco-Pette shops. The plant receives its motive power from the water-fall which turns the three massive water wheels. The ' water wheel shaft is connected with the shafts in the mill by ten large cables which take the place of huge leather belts in giving a momentum to the wheels in the mill. The com pany manufactures yarns 2Q's to 30's and brown sheeting cloth, , all of which finds an easy market. - - r - THE OFFICERS The officers of the High Shoals Company are all Char lotte men. Mr. D. A.. Thomp kins is president, Mr. T. N. Constables secretary and Mr, George L. Krueger treasurer. Mr. A. Q. Kale has been super intendent of the mill from the beginning and much of the mill's , success is due to his manage ment. Mr. u. A. Mediin is tne mill's bookkeeper and Mr. J. C. McBrayer is manager of the company's general store and also has the reputation of holding the only Federal office, that of postmaster. The plant runs night and day and gives employ ment to about 300 employes all of whom seem to be happy and content with their lot. Across the river, opposite the mill, is an exceedingly beautiful place which the company is pre paring to transform into a pleas , are park, Just below the dam on the same side of the river is a refreshing spring. which" will be made the resting place for the weary and an ideal place for the spreading of picnic dinners, while on the little island in the river wnicn wiu De connected with the main land by a small bridge, there .will be erected swings and other apparatus for the entertainment' of those who - may come to the place to spend the long hours' of a hot summer day, to enjoy the refreshing Jireezes that flit across the river, to drop a line for the catfish, or to stretch on the long benches and drink of the pure beverage of nature which abounds be,re in - surpassing excellence. -; v; ' ' THE VILLAGE. ' The village of High Shoals, own edifices, regular ser vices being held in each. The public, school is open the full school year and the children of school age have every advantage, as regards the public school in struction. Mr. W, R. Rhyne has charge of the school this year and speaks in the highest terms of the year's record. Mr. A. Q. Kale, the superintendent, has just completed a fine' new residence on the elevation above the depot and another large new dwelling for the master mechan ic is beingr built on the hill across the river. High Shoals may be classed among the pro gressive little towns of this sec Hon.-: The company store, of which Mr. McBrayer is manager, does the entire mercantile bus iness for the village while the firm of A. M. Shrum & Co. serves the people in the way of fresh meats, ice and fish. They also handle beef on the hoof and do quite an extensive business. BESSEMER BRIEFS. Correspondence of The Gasette. t Bessemer City, May 13- Hon. U. if. Mason, ot Dallas, was a visitor in town Tuesday. Miss Johnston, a teacher in the Bes semer graded school, left for her home in Virginia Tuesday. Miss Ella ' Rankin returned to Belmont Tuesday. Mrs. . L. Mason who has been visiting re latives here returned to Dallas Friday. Rev. and Mrs. W. -H Hardin, of Gastonia, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Whitney Wednesday. Dr. D. A. Gam- son spent Friday in Charlotte. Mrs. H. N Garrison and daugh ter, Elizabeth, are visiting in Shelby. Rev. and Mrs. Plato Durham, of Charlotte, and Miss Cole, of Rockingham, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Durham, returned home Wednesday. Mrs. J. A. Smith has returned from a visit to Dan ville. Mrs. John Swift died Sunday at 5 o'clock after an illness of three weeks. She leaves a hus band and three small children, who have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. Bishop J.M. Horner, of Ashe ville, assisted by Rev. W. H. Hardin, of Gastonia, conducted confirmation services at the Episcopal church Friday even' ing at 8 o'clock. BASEBALL. : By a score of 10 to 8 the busi ness men's team defeated the graded school team in a game of baseball at the Lorav Park Wednesday afternoon. The at tendance was small. Unce or , twice during the game some en thusiasm was aroused and a at tie excitement created, notably when Will Little, of the school team, knocked a three-Bagger, bringing two men in home and getting almost within . reach ing distance of .the heme plate himself. Once the school team had three men Cn bases! the business men became rat tled and all three scored. The battenes were: School team Gray and Bell : business men i Wetzell and Wetzell; umpire. Mr. Miller. Gastonia and McAdenville will play the first game in - the sum mer series at the ball park to-1 morrow aiternoon. The game. will be called at 3 45 o'clock. Week oi Gaiety Arranged for In Charlotte Under Auspices of ; Charlotte Artillery. Correspondence of The Gazette. : Charlotte, May 16 The vari ous committee shaving in charge the program of the annual 20th of May celebration, which will take place here next week un der the auspices of the Twen tieth of May Military Festival, have arranged for a whole week of gaiety and pleasure beginning next Monday morning and con tinuing until Saturday night, May 25tb. Both the Seaboard Air Line and Sou them Railways, having ( offered the attractive low rate of one fare plus 25 cents for the i round trip good from all points in North Caro lina and upper South Carolina, are receiving inquiries every day. The more prominent features of the celebration will be the military drills, night fire-works display and the usual mid-way attractions. A carnival com pany with 20 high class shows will arrive here the. latter part of the week and will pitch tents within the fair grounds en closure at Latta Park.
