Calvin Harmon arrived Wednesday morning from Rowland, Robeson county, where he has had charge during the past session of the Kowiand graded schools. He spent Wednesday here with his aunt. Mrs. O. W. The first of June Mr. Harmon will go to Pleasant Garden, Guilford county, where he will have charge as pastor of the Methodist church during the summer. 'When he becamill an examination by physicians revealed the fact that he was suffering from ' an ad vanced case Of appendicitis. At that time : his condition ' wouid not admit of an operation and it was deferred. I On .Wednesday Dr. Pressley, of Charlotte, was called 7 in' consultation and a slight operation was performed. The appendix was not removed, however.' " 7V. Had he lived till the 19th of August be would have been 18 years of age. For the past six months' he had been in the employ of the Gastonia Hard ware Company, where he . was held in high esteem by all bis associates. He was quiet, in dustrious, courteous and num bered his friends by the circle of his acquaintanne. His friends were indeed many, as was evidenced by the remarks of concern heard on" every band during bis illness. ' Funeral services were held at the late home of the, deceased this morning, the services being by Rev. Dr. J. C. Galloway and Rev. W. H. Hardin. - Interment followed in in Oakwood Cemetery. There were many friends present to testify to the sorrow that is felt in the community over his death. M " a. It has been determined by the mayor and the board of aldermen of the town of Gastonia that the sum of , $75,000 is requisite and necessary in order to carry out the purposes set forth in an act of the General Assembly of North Car olina entitled, An act to authorize the board of aldermen of the town of Gastonia to issue bonds in the sum of one hundred thousand dollars. etc,? chapter , of the 1 statutes of 1807, to be expended as follows; " For street improvements, $30,000. "For graded schools, $15,000. "For water-works and sewerage, $23,000. " For electric lights, $2,000. "For refunding the present float ing debt, $5,000. -' "Therefore, the said mayor and the board of aldermen of the town of Gastonia do ordain and enact: "1. That the Bum of thirty thou sand dollars be expended for street improvements; that the sum of fif teen thousand dollars be expended for eraded schools: that : the sum of twenty-three thousand 4 dollars be expended for . water works, and sewerage; that the sum of two thou sand dollars be expended for elec tric lights; that the sum of five thousand be expended for funding the floating debt. "2. That an election be called to ascertain the will of the qualified electors of the town of Gastonia and for authorizing the issuance of the interest-bearing bonds of the said, the town of Gastonia, for the said purpose of raisins: the said sum of seventy -five tnousana aoiiars. "3. That the said election shall be held at the town hall in the town of Gastonia, North Carolina, on Tues day the 2nd day of July, 1907. "4. That a new registration of the qualified electors of the town of Gastonia, be and the same is hereby ordered, and W. T. Rankin is ap pointed registrar, and is required to open up books for a new registration according to the said act; that John F. Bradley and M. H. Shu ford be and are hereby appointed the judges of the said election. "5. It is further ordained and enacted that notice of the said election and the said new registra tion be published at the door of the town hall, and in The .Gastonia Gazette and The Gastonia News once a week for thirty days next proceed ing the said election." ' In the absence of the pastor. Rev. R. C. Anderson, who is to preach the baccalaureate sermon at - Linwood-Cpllege Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. J. B. Cochrane, pas tor of New Hope church, will fill Mr. Anderson's pulpit. Mr. Cochrane's pulpit will be filled by Rey. J. J. Kennedy, of Gastonia. . -The Gaston division of the Southern Cotton Association held its regular meeting in the Court - House in Dallas Tuesdav durimr the noon hour. There was only a .small attendance and very little interest ' was manifested. Col. R. L. Aber nethy, -as usual, got in one or two of his speeches. - : -v . : The Gastonia Cotton Oil Com pany is making some extensive im provements at its factory, prepara tory for the next season. A 50 horse power General Electric motor has been ordered and will soon be in- 'stalled. This is to drive the gin and will be operated by power from the . Southern Power Company, An elec tric power tramper is also to be in stalled to replace the steam pouer tramper now in use for packing the cotton in the first box. In the oil manufacturing department the same power will be used as at present, which is electric power generated by their own motor. New arrangements will be made, however, for lighting tne oil manufacturing department. In addition to these improvements the entire plant is being overhauled nd put in tip-top shape for the next ginning season. The plant is now closed for the summer but will be ready to open as soon as new cotton appears on the market. Mr. Wil liam King, the manager, is looking after these renovations. The. instal lation of the 50 . horse-power motor will incresase the daily capacity in the ginnery six bales. The capacity of the oil plant will cot be increased. Gastonia Girl Cats Votes. The bonus of 500 votes in The Gazette's Jamestown Exposition contest offered to the young lady who turned in the largest number of yearly subscribers for one week ending at noon to-day goes to Miss Salenah Latham, of Gastonia. A similar offer is made dating from 4 o'clock this afternoon and ending at noon next Friday, May 31, limited to young ladies in District No. 2, which - includes all of Gaston county outside of Gastonia and including Kings Mountain and Clover. . At his home three miles south of Gastonia Mr. S. M. (Bnd) Hawkins died, suddenly yester day. He had taken a dose of medicine in anticipation of a chill and while couhging ruptur ed a blood vessel which resulted. in almost instant death. Mr. Hawkins had not been confined to his home and was in fairly good health. He was 50-odd years of age and leaves a wife and several children. The fun eral and burial took place this morning at Olney Presbyterian church. , Warehouses Ior Gaston. In an interview with The Gazette's reporter in Charlotte Wednesday Hon. C. C. Moote, president of the North Carolina division of the Sonthern Cotton Association, stated tnat it was the purpose of , the, warehouse committee of the association to build cotton warehouses at Gas tonia, Lowell, McAdenville, Mt. Holly, Stanley and ' probably other, places. The warehouses will - not be very expensive. Capital stock sufficient to pur chase all cotton offered for less than its real value will be ware housed and held : until a fair price is given. : If the farmers of Gaston take the interest in this matter they should, the ware house will be a certainty and heing a fugitive from . justice. He was taken to Clover yesterday by a depnty sheriff from York county. The board of aldermen met at the city hall at the call of the mayor at 9.5Q a. m. May 23 News has been received here of the death of Mr. Rufns 3.. Stowe, which occurred at Fort Xwn, S. C, Saturday. May 4tb, 1907. Mr. Stowe was about 48 years of age and was a strong well tnan until pneumonia set in, which resulted in his deatn. Mr. Stowe was born in Gaston County and made his home near Mt. Holly, until a few years ago. He bad many friends throughout the county who will hear the news of his death with .sadness. He is survived by his wife and a number of relatives at Mt.
