The reform ers and philanthropists have in variably made child labor in the trHls their, chief point of attack and have rictuied a most dis tress'ny condition of affairs; little children worked to death in the mills, little children bythethou- and, ill inform--n readers would im.'gine from t'u- noise the re foitmrs have made. Mr Kohn shows by actual count that there are tniplowdin the mills in this State 38,860 operatives, and among them only 495 chil dren under 12 years of age, 289 bos and 206 girls, or Vi ptr cent of the mill workers of the State or one in every seventy- eight In Mr kohn s opinion tnere mav be three times as many children under 12 ears of age emplcyi d in the mill, but even in that case the condition would not be nearlv so bad as it has been pictured by the busy bodies and philanthropists. The managers of the mills do not en courage the employment of very ouug children ; indeed, they do not permit their employment un- ess it is clearly within the ex ceptious noted by the law and made necessary by the actual condition of the children seek ing work; and when they are employed thev receive the most considerate treatment. If the studeuts of the child labor pro blem, and there is noue to doubt its importance, would like to learn he truth and to tell the truth they will find it greatly to their advantage to read the articles that have been prepared with so great care by Mr. Kohn.
