GASTONIA GAZETTE. F ./ Issued esday and Frida; by Th<j tte Publishing Company I D. ATKINS, Editor. #. W. ATKINS, Business Manager... Armstrong Building, Main Street. f PHONE NO. 50. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE: • One year.J1.5( Six months.7 5 Four months.. One month.15 TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1008. In commenting upon the letter ol President W. W. Finley, of the Sou them Railway, which we are pub lishing in to-day’s issue, The Greens 1 boro Industrial News has the follow ing to say: , "We are publishing in anothei column to-day a1! letter from Presi dent Finley, of the Southern Rail way, in which allusion is made tc business conditions, especially in the jjf-^^^uth, and in which he takes occas iomHo emphasize the importance ol diversification of agriculture and manufacturing in the various south ern states- He invites consideratioi of this subject, and is persuaded that now is the accepted time for urging each southern community to make the most of the opportunities which wtW be presented by a revival ol business. ✓ While the past decade naa wit V neased a wonderful change in condi tions for the better in this reaped we are in accord with Mr. Finley in the expressed opinion that it should be the atm of the south to add still further to the profits of producing raw materials, the profits of manu / facturlng, by "converting raw ma terials, as far aa possible, Into arti cles ready for use.” "The south Is peculiarly fortunate In this reaped—that Is, In the un told weath of her raw materials, al ways at hand_ to encourage the establishment of a variety of manu v factoring enterprises. And by rea < ' son of the country’s bedeflclent pol icy of protection southern rpw ma terials receive the same safe meas ure of protection that is given to the American workman and the Ameri can manufacturer of the north and cast. "There could be no greater incent ive to a diversification of manufac turing In An south than is found it the.assurance of this^permanent pro tection -from a possible hurtful for eign competition.” •' '_1_ WiH Lone *3.800 in Taxes. At the July meeting of^the boari of. county commissioners thO- follow ing order was made: "It is orderei that so inoch of the order of tbi: beard made on .the first Monday li June. 1908,Vv/lng a tax of 76 cent! . on each taxnie poll In the count] for road purposes be rectnded; thli order Is mo^de In obedience to th< opinion of the Supreme Court In th< case of the (Southern Railway vs Commissioners of Mecklenburg Com ty.” The effect of the above decls Ion referred to was that the count] _ . can not exceed the constitutional llm •' ' ■ It pf $2 in Imposing poll taxes. Foi several years, ever since the custon of requiring each taxpayer to worli so many days on the roads each yeai was abolished, an extra road tax o: 75 cents has been assessed In add! tlon to the regular 22. The effect of this Order of the board will be tc reduce the amount received cn pol taxes In the county about 23.301 ■ - TAurW. —An eight-months-old child o Mr. and Mrs. 8. L- Johnston dlec Sunday and' was buried at Shllot yesterday. —An obstreperous gasoline burn ' or on the linotype machine hai caused a slight delay In getting out this Issue of The Gazette, which w< \ trust all bur readers will pardon. •‘—In some sections of the count] at least fruit Is so plentiful that th< farmers can not use It all. In t drive of 20 or 26 miles Saturday Th< Oazette man saw numbers of orch ards where splendid apples were rot ting rn' the ground by the scores ol bushels and this In spite of the faci that nearly everybody Is canning plenty to last through the wlntei ‘ months. A first-class canning fac tory for putting up apples, peaches tomatoes, beanB, etc. would save many hundreds of dollars every yeai to Gaston farmers. We see no iea son why it wouldn’t be a good paying industry. . Here's a hint for some body with capital'to invest. An inclination to be constip ated is a common symptom of the American people. This is due to indigestion, and indiges tion comes jrom indiscretion of diet. Let foods be daily eaten like D? PRICE'S WHEAT FLAKE CELERY FOOD and there would be no constip ation. IO cants a package.
