Charles Fedrell, a negro sentenced to life imprisonment at the May term of Forsyth Superior Court for the murder of his wife, escaped Monday from the State convict camp at Lau rlnburg, and has not yet been appre hended. Early Joins Salvation Army. Wilmington Dispatch. The report comes that John Ear ly, North Carolinian and supposed leper, has been cured and is now a free man In the city pf New York. Appreciative of his deliverance he has engaged in the Qoepel work, unit tag his life with that of the Salvation Army, which stood so nobly by him in his time of trial and tribulation. Defaulting Cashier Sentenced. George A. Kimball, defaulting cashier of the Citizens Banking anil Trust .Company, of Southern Pines, was sentenced on Tuesday at Carth age to serve three years in the State prison. Kimball pleaded guilty to embezzlement and to falsifying the bpoks and records of the bank, and the light sentence was Imposed out of regard to his enfeebled condition. He appeared In court under the con stant care of his wife and two phys icians and Is apparently in the last stages of tuberculosis. Man Killed With a Hoç. At Banner Elk, ip Watauga coun ty, last Monday, Mrs. Mary Bennett felled Alonzo Hardin with a hoe and then beat out his brains with the same weapon. Hardin, in a drunken rage, was applying vile epithets to the woman, between whom and him· self there had been bad blood for some time, when she became enrag ed and attacked him with the ho·, Inflicting injuries from which "he died in a short time. Neighbors sep arated the combatants, but'too late to save Hardin's life. Expiree on Train. Mr. Thomas M. Hufham, a well known lawyer of Hickory, was dis covered in a dying condition In the Raleigh sleeper at Greensboro short, ly after midnight Monday night and expired before an ambulance could be secured. Mr. Hufham was en route to Raleigh on legal business and entered the sleeper about IX o'clock Monday night. A small box of half-grain morphine tablets was found In bis pocket, and It is sbppos ed that he took an overdose of the drug, though probably by accident "d not with suicidal lntfcnt. Mr. '{ufham's wife and two small chil dren were In Ashevlile on a visit at the time of his death. His remains were brought to Hickory Tuesday, where the funeral took place on Wed nesday. Kendrlck conclaves, Improved OrderoMiefUl· sophs, gave a most delightful and successful picnic Wednesday in ttft grove surrounding the public school at Clover. There was present a large concourse of people from Rock Hill, Yorkvllle, Gastonla, and other near by towns, as well as many local Hep tasophs and their friends. A speaker's stand had been erected in the grove and there were addresses by Hon. D. E. Findley, Representa tive in Congress of the Fifth South Carolina District, John B. Sloan, of Rock Hill, Solicitor J. K. Henry and Hon. T. B. Butler, of Gaffney. Mr. Sam 'McCall acted as master of cere monies and introduced the speakers. At noon a basket dinner was spread on long tables under the trees and all who were present were enter tained in a most hospitable fashion with an abundance of good things to eat. ' The pleasures of the day were further added to by two interesting baseball games, one in the morning in which Begonia defeated the Clo ver Cotton Mill team by a score of 4 to 3, and another interesting game In the afternoon between Clover and Lowrysvllle, which resulted in a score of 7 to 4 in favor of Clover. The teams are not in the league, as yet, and therefore are un named. B. A. Correll did some wild pitching and Dave Abernethy made a splendid umpire, using unheard of tact. The game was called in the eleventh Inning on the probability of rain. Mrs. Hattle Williams and son, Reedy, returned Wednesday after a visit In Converse, S.C.—Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Governor Blasscoek, of West Virginia, is said to contemplate call ing a special session of the legisla ture to consider a primary law and a liquor reform measure. President Garfield may be nomina ted by the Republicans of Ohio to make the race against Governor Har mon, whom the Democrats will prob ably nominate for a second term. Caleb Powers, whose several trials on the charge of complicity in the as sassination of Governor Goebel, of Kentucky, occupied public attention for nearly five years, haa announced his. candidacy for congrprç. The city of Toledo, ά., expects to have a hot fight on for mayor and other city officials this fall. The street railway problem is the lead ing issue and it will bë fought out along the lines of Tom Johnson's three-cent fare campaign. Governor Prank W. Benson, of Or egon, is not especially fond of his of fice as chief executive and will not be a candidate for re-election. He desires to return to the office of sec retary of State, which he filled prior to his elevation to the gubernatorial chair to succeed Governor Chamber lain, who was elected fo the United States senate.
